Breaking the journey

We are due to travel from Lancashire to Stockbridge, Hampshire and would like to break the journey about half way down with an overnight stay. I reckon this would place us in the Gloucester/Worcester area.

We would like somewhere picturesque so that we could have a walk round in the afternoon and then a few good pubs and restaurants to choose from in the evening. Any ideas?

As you seem to have a bit of time in hand, I'd recommend the A49 as a very pleasant north-south route which parallels the M6 motorway, some distance to the west. You could pick this up just to the south of Warrington and from there on it's a reasonably lightly-trafficked route, with only Shrewsbury as a biggish town to by-pass (though there's plenty to see there, if you have the time). There's Ludlow, of course, many people's idea of the perfect small English town, with all its various 'foody' outlets. A very pleasant small town a bit further south which might fit the bill for an overnight stop is Ledbury, which is stuffed full of 'black and white' buildings and pretty photo opportunities. Nearby Great Malvern has some elegant 'spa'-type architecture, and the Malvern Hills are of course very close by, if you have time for a bit of a walk.

Hello Fawlty... Thanks for this. We took your suggestion and stayed in Ledbury. It was a nice little town but parking was a bit of an issue tho that seems to be the case everywhere these days. Anyway it served it's purpose, so cheers!
