Things to do in the evening for single travellers

Hi guys. I'm going to be spending a few nights in Birmingham on business but will be there alone. I've never been so would like to see a bit of the city and wondered if there was anything you'd recommend to check out (or avoid!) for a female travelling alone. My meals and work stuff will all take place in the hotel (the Radisson) so would like to head out at night (not too late - early evening) if there is anything to do (even if its just somewhere safe for a nice walk).

I've got quite a bit of time to burn one of the nights before heading back to the airport so was planning on visiting the Bullring that night.

Thanks in advance!

Head towards China Town (turn left from Radisson and cross at traffic lights by Hurst St, then turn left) and you will find excellent cuisine at great prices.

Turn right when exiting the Rad, walk back and you will see the Mailbox mall on the opposite side of the road.

Keep walking past the Mailbox and you will come to Broad Street. Check out Brindley Place opposite the Hyatt... The Waterfront is beautiful with fine restaurants. Nice pubs in Broad St too.

This week the Grosvenor casino further up has a George Michael tribute night. It's free, just walk with ID for membership. There's a very fine restaurant downstairs in the Casino also.

Cannon Hill Park is wonderful this time of the year.

The new Birmingham library is well worth a visit. I am not sure of the opening times though.

Amazing building inside, and two huge outside gardens that give great views over the city and surrounding areas. One is on the 3rd floor, and there is a "secret garden" on the 7th floor (though it is signposted from the lift so it is not that secret).

While library many sound boring this is a modern building with lots of computers, a café and bar where you can buy alcohol.

In fact following on from Jumbie's suggestion about the Broad St.

Come out of the Radisson hotel, turn right and head towards the Mailbox.

But go THROUGH the Mailbox and come out the back (they are doing some major work in the Mailbox so you may be sent round a side door).

At the back of the Mailbox you get to an area full of bars and restaurants. This is alongside the canal so very pleasant. There will be lots of people around so quite safe.

Walk from the Mailbox towards the Cube building (huge building that looks like a giant tetris game). This is still alongside the canal. Go inside the Cube and look up, it is a hollow building and quite an amazing piece of architecture. A few interesting "heart" statues inside.

Now go across the nearby bridge and walk over it and keep walking straight ahead and go under a bridge in the distance (this is Broad St going over the canal).

When you come out the other side of the bridge you are at Waterside and near Brindley place. This is a fine area to walk around.

To help you find your way around a few photos.

This is a picture of the back of the Mailbox

Here is waterside (you can see the bridge in the distance, the Mailbox and Cube are the other side so you come under this bridge from the other side)

Oh, I forgot to mention that there is the Sealife centre near the Waterfront and the Malthouse is nice to sit canals idea and have a drink.

in addition to the great suggestions above, you should also look at What's On and Visit Birmingham - both will have details of evening entertainment. Your hotel is located within easy walking distance of numerous theatres - get listings for The Crescent, The Birmingham Rep, Alexandra Theatre and The Hippodrome. I would also like to repeat the suggestion of a visit to the Library of Birmingham - on a nice evening the roof gardens are fantastic.

Hi,

I will be visiting Birmingham on Thursday and love the sound of eating at a restaurant behind the Mailbox ( the picture in a previous post looks lovely.) How do you get there from New Street? Is it far? Thanks

Not sure which part of New Street you will know... this map from New Street to the mailbox should cover most options. Maximum 10 minutes walk but more like 5.
