We recently visited Bath and had the very unfortunate experience of parking in the public lot below Waitrose. The posted sign gave parking costs and we saw six pounds for up to four hours. We didn't really plan to stay longer so we didn't give it much more thought as it was public parking. We returned just over 4 hours later and were ABSOLUTELY STUNNED when we went to pay and discovered there are no rates for over four hours - it is 25 pounds! This is done almost like a "you should have read the fine print" . Bath is a pretty but typical town that would be nothing but for the very interesting Roman baths which are worth seeing, but there is a charge for everything else and after travels to so many more beautiful and less over-rated places, the only thing I will remember about Bath is being robbed by a machine in the parking lot.
It is truly disgraceful and the locals are both embarrassed and disgusted by it as there seems to be little way of warning the poor unsuspecting tourist.
