Southampton to Bath with private driver: What to see?

We've been to Salisbury and Avebury and Lacock and Castle Combe (loved everything). We'd at first thought to visit Highclere, but I find that the commercialism of the whole thing kind of turns me off. I'm trying to decide what might be a pleasant way to spend 4-5 hours on the transport from ship to Bath hotel. (I can't wait to return to Bath-- loved it!)

We have no interest in shopping and aren't crazy about spending a lot of time in pubs or tea-rooms. We enjoy walking and we enjoy seeing historical sights and beautiful scenery. Also enjoy strolling through interesting towns.

Thanks for suggestions.

Another vote for Stourhead from me - it's what prompted me to join the National Trust many many years ago!

As railtraveler suggested, I am sure that our destination on Sept 2 will depend in part on weather. But I'm sold on Stourhead unless it's just too muddy or nasty. I guess that means a visit to Wells after, rather than Winchester? Or maybe we'll visit Salisbury again and skip seeing W or W; we liked Salisbury a lot. (Sarum somehow doesn't seem all that interesting. I could be totally wrong...) Or maybe do JUST Stourhead and get to Bath early rather than late afternoon.

I have certainly appreciated the feedback-- thank you so much!

I love Wells too. It's a tiny city with a lovely High Street ending in the Cathedral green. If you're not Cathedraled out by Bath and Salisbury, the Wells Cathedral has the famous Scissors Arches (a master builder's quite successful 14thC solution for the tower collapsing), a wonderful clock that has knights come out and joust every quarter hour, and a great medieval courtyard/street.

Second the rec for Stourhead. It's one of the greatest of the great houses. A bit west of Salisbury. There are monstrous old trees lining the lane going up to the house. They're amazing old trees, make for great photos.

Hi again

You can easily while away a good few hours at Stourhead as long as the weather's reasonable.
