Restaurant near Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel

We would like a recommendation for a mid-priced restaurant near the above hotel. We will be staying at the Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel in September as part of a tour, but no dinner is provided.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What do you mean by near ? ths MBS is a 10-15 minute walk from town (a very pleasant walk I hasten to add) and is on the wrong side of the town centre for most of the restaurants.

And what do you mean by mid-priced ? £20 per head, £30 per head ? more ?

The Circus or Woods would fit the bill, especially at the latter price. There are a couple of pubs in Widcombe, which are an easy walk, but they are not in the city centre - which if you only have one night I think you need to aim for.

Whatever you do, don't plan on eating at the MBS, food is overpriced for what it is.

What day of the week, btw ?

We have two nights in Bath as part of a Tauck tour....the first night dinner is included and we would assume it will be at the hotel. The second night is the one we are looking for and that is a Friday. We are probably looking at 20 pounds per head.

We might try the pubs in Widcombe as we will be doing the major city sights as part of the tour.

Many thanks for your advice.....we will not dine at the MBS - especially if we eat there on the Thursday evening.

Would strongly recommend the White Hart in Widcombe though you would probably need to book ahead for a Friday night. It is quite a walk from the Bath Spa hotel though very pleasant to stroll along the canal if it is still light.

Well, 15 -20 minutes tops, unless you are elderly or infirm.

No where is really near the Bath Spa, however, the one place nearest to you that I would recommend you eat at is The Allium Brasserie, which is part of The Abbey Hotel. If you read the reviews on here you will see why! I would also recommend Menu Gordon Jones, but not within walking distance, also hard to get a reservation.

The Circus is also always good, but not within walking distance unless you really like walking!

PS When you say £20 per head, are you thinking starter and main course? It is unlikely that either of the gastro pubs on Widcombe (White Hart, good food, not so good service, The Ring O Bells, last year won gastro pub of the year in the Bath good food awards) will fit into that price range for 2 courses.

there are 2 restaurants in the Bath Spa-the Al Fresco is a bit cheaper than the Vellore and the food is excellent, and anyway, you will be having breakfast in the Vellore in the morning so always nice to eat in a different area of the hotel. MBS is a good walk into the city centre-we used to walk down and get a taxi back.

Have you considered signing up for a free taste card with the daily mail? you can then get 2 meals for the price of one as long as you book the restaurant over the phone. Mezzaluna is an excellent Italian.

I would suggest you check the menus out on websites or as you go round the city before you go as sometimes menus not suitable for all tastes/members of the family.

I'd strongly recommend Woods or Browns, which are both about a 20-25 minute away from town. Likewise, Demuths is very good, located next door to Sally Lunn's in town and is a vegetarian speciality restaurant :)

Have to disagree 100% about Demuth's,:we went on a Monday so perhaps the main chef was off for the day, but even the vegetarians amongst us thought it a waste of money: as for carnivores like me.....
