Cotswolds and Chatsworth

We are flying in LHR on 8/15 and planned to go to Windsor first, visiting the castle and staying at the Holiday Inn. We want to see villages in the Cotswolds on 8/16 staying overnight then driving to Chatsworth the next day. Need suggestions about car rental, best route and place to stay overnight. It can be in Cotswolds or on the way to Chatsworth. We will be staying in Chatsworth on 8/17. We haven't driven in UK before so a tad nervous.

Don't worry about driving in the UK. You'll be hiring a car so it will be the right way round (ie driver on the right) for driving here. When we drive on the continent we find it no problem with a hire car designed for driving on the right, but it's much harder if we take our own car which is designed for driving on the left! And we had no problem when we visited New England and hired a car.

Try www.theaa.com or maps.google.co.uk for route planning. With the AA you can choose a non-motorway option if you prefer, although it will take a lot longer (unless there's an incident on the Motorway in which case that could take ages.) The main thing to remember is when leaving a motorway, to take care which side of the road to join. It's very easy to forget about 2-way roads when on the motorway for long stretches....

Now, for places to stay, try www.laterooms.com. There will be loads of options. Try somewhere like Moreton in Marsh in the Cotswolds. Not too far to drive from Windsor and you can enjoy the countryside on the way. Plus it has plenty of places to eat.

You can get a great cream tea at The Mill House in Kingham. Scones freshly baked to order with thick clotted cream. Yum. They also have rooms and a restaurant so maybe worth a look.

You'll be driving to Chatsworth on a Saturday in August. In the UK August Saturdays are very busy on the roads as families head for their holidays. No rush hour to deal with, but you may need to allow extra time.

Have fun planning and have a great trip.

Angie

Where are you going after Chatsworth, and will you need a car for that part of the holiday ?

We were thinking of making Oxford our jumping off point and rent the car from there and return it after Chatsworth visit. Then take the train to Paddington station. So we would have the car just for the Cotswolds and that drive. What do you think? A little Leary to drive from Heathrow and jet lagged. Can you suggest a car hire company? Read some dreadful reviews about rentals from Heathrow.

Thank you for the code! Can you suggest a less traveled route from Cotswolds to Chatsworth?

This is a journey I have driven several times - here are links to two possibilities

- Easy route - http://goo.gl/maps/u2Tlr

- Back road route (more complicated) - http://goo.gl/maps/jTMDK .

Hiring a car at Oxford is a sensible idea, but I have never done it so others will need to advise you about doing this.

Your other thread suggests that you might want to make this journey using public transport. If so I would suggest that you stay in Oxford for 2 nights and just hire the car for one day to visit the northern part of the cotswolds. Then on day 2, catch the train from Oxford to Sheffield, from where buses run every hour over the hills to Bakewell (you could also get off the train at Chesterfield or Derby, but getting to Bakewell is much easier from Sheffield).
