York and the surrounding countryside are really pretty, with lots to see and do - if need be, you could do it in a day. If you could stay overnight, you could go to Durham as well - the cathedral is just gorgeous - but York could be a long day trip. Trains from King's Cross take between one hour fifty minutes to two hours seven minutes each way, and off peak fares are as little as 30GBP return.

Honest opinion...

We did a day in York in 2003 (stayed overnight) and still felt we needed more time. In 2004 we had 10 days in York (mostly due to an eent we were at) and manged to see much more. If you chose to go to York for the day you are looking at a very long day and it depends what your interests are.

If it's churches you'd get away with a day trip, museums..maybe, transport (ie rail) possibly but combine any of the above and you need more time...If it means missing York by not daytripping...I'd do the long day and plan to return for a better look.

If you are limited for time then, yes, you could visit York for the day. The train service is fast and frequent starting at 0600 from Kings Cross. However, the fare can be quite steep unless you book in advance to get a cheaper deal or are travelling on a special pass available to US citizens. Once in York - a small enough place to get around - walk the Bar Walls, visit the Minister, walk the streets, visit a museum or two, lunch in one of the City's pub, afternoon tea at Betty's etc etc.

However, if you have more time then you could cheerfully spend several days based in York which would give you the chance to see some of our delightful countryside a half hour or so away including Castle Howard of Brideshead Revisited fame.

Whatever you do, enjoy your visit.

The main museum, 2-3 hours, the Minster 1-2 hours, lunch at the restaurant next to the Minster 1 hour, the Rail Museum 1 hour (3 hours for me !), the Jorvik Viking Centre 2 hours, the National Trust Merchant's house 1 hour, walk round the walls 2-4 hours, the Shanbles old shopping street 1 hour, travel between items 3 hours................
