York to Whitby - Bus and NYMR

Hi Folks

We will be in York for a couple of days as part of a UK touring holiday in mid April.

Although we will have a hire car, we would like to do a day trip from York to Whitby and back using a mixture of the bus and the NYMR.

With the ideal being to "leave the car at home", we are thinking of taking the bus to Pickering, the train to Whitby, then the bus back to York or vice versa.

Grateful for any advice on how best to achieve this.

Many thanks in advance..

You could also consider taking the train to Scarborough, bus to Whitby, train to Pickering, then bus back to York, or bus to Malton then train back to York

Coastliner run buses between York, Pickering, Goathland and Whitby - see http://getdown.org.uk/b/840. This runs every day (except Sundays until 13 April), several times a day.

Check the times of the NYMR trains at nymr.co.uk/wp-content/… and see what works best - allow plenty of time for the connection at Pickering, as it's a few minutes walk between the bus stop and the station. Some trains run through to Whitby (only diesel trains, not steam trains). Other times you can get the train to Grosmont and then continue to Whitby either on a regular train (eskvalleyrailway.co.uk/stations/…timetable) or by bus (http://getdown.org.uk/b/99) - or you can get back on a Coastliner bus at Goathland.

If you're buying your bus tickets, a Coastliner Freedom ticket at £15 gives you unlimited use of their buses all day (doesn't cover the 99) and gives you the flexibility to get on and off where you want, and is only a couple of pounds more than a standard return.

If you've got a free pass then you might want to go via Scarborough in one direction, but this does take longer so you will be spending more of your day on the bus, and you'll miss the chance to go right over the top of the moors upstairs on a double-decker, which is well worth it!

I wouldn't recommend using the train between York and Malton when you'll be continuing by bus, much easier to get the bus straight through from York.

Leave York 8.39, arrive Whitby 10.50am via Coastliner.

Leave Whitby 14.00, arrive Pickering 15.40 by train.

Leave Pickering 16.04 (assuming school hols otherwise a tight fit at 15.48!) arrive back in York 17.15. if you get the later train you will not get back to Pickering until 19.00, probably missing the last bus back to York at 19.04?!

IMO you may get more from your day if you drive through to Pickering then use the bus and train to/from Whitby. The bus is relatively slow from York to Malton and it takes no more than 45 min in the car.

Most NYMR services are, in fact, steam to Whitby, but the first train from Pickering and the last one back may be a diesel between Grosmont and Pickering. The details are shown on the timetable page at http:\\www.nymrdiesel.co.uk

TP Express train leaves York 10:40, arriving Malton 11:03

Coastliner service 840 leaves Malton 11:12, arriving Pickering 11:35

NYMR service leaves Pickering 12:00, arriving Whitby 13:35

If you want to look around Whitby, rather than returning straight away, I'd suggest:

Northern train leaves Whitby 16:00, arriving Grosmont 16:17 *

NYMR train leaves Grosmont 16:30, arriving Pickering 17:40

Coastliner service 840 leaves Pickering 18:04 and arrives Malton 18:28

TP Express train leaves Malton at 19:11 and arrives York 19:28

* NYMR ticket not valid, so another ticket would be needed and - beware - train may be "quite full" of school children returning home!

Other possibilities for return would be the Coastliner at 17:45 (changing buses at Malton) to return to York for 20:03 or Arriva service 93 to Scarborough for a train back from there.
