Visiting York without a car

We have booked to go to York next week but as travelling up there from the West Country have opted to go by train and forego using the car. Is it easy to do day trips out from York using public transport? I can see that trains go to Scarborough but to get to places like the Yorkshire dales, North Yorkshire Moors or Castle Howard do you need a car?

The North York Moors are possible by bus - google for Yorkshire Coastliner some of which take the moors route to Whitby

Dales - more difficult, nothing direct

Castle Howard has an infrequent bus service - tip - if you show your return bus ticket you get reduced price admission stephensonsofeasingwold.co.uk/images/uploads…

For the Dales definitely hire a car, even the Moors can be hard except for the main routes - you could however take a bus to Pickering then the NY Moors Railway to Whitby returning to York via Scarborough (bus then train).

Alternatively if you are there for several days hire a car for the weekend which tends to be the cheapest time for hiring

If you go to Malton by train (25 minutes from York) you can catch the bus for Castle Howard at the bus stop opposite the train station. If you check with York Tourism Information (office next to the traffic lights in front of the Minster) they can give you the correct timings.

Scarborough is also easily accessible by train from York (about 40 minutes). Scarborough station is in the centre of the town so it is a bit of a walk to the sea front but there are plenty of taxis.

If you take the bus to the more popular coastal towns you need to be aware that they can get very crowded (lots of free bus passes!). You will probably be OK if you get the bus from the centre of York.

So far as the Dales without a car is concerned you can get the train from York to Leeds and then get a train to Carlisle which will take you through Skipton and then on the Settle - Carisle line over Ribblehead viaduct. This is a very scenic route.

Alternatively, get off the train at Skipton, spend some time there and perhaps get a bus up the dales. This link should help you to plan buses.

Have fun!
