Interesting stops between Heathrow and York?

My wife and I will be spending 4 (maybe 5) days in York late next spring and have a full itinerary already planned thanks to these forums and other sources. Have noted that the driving time between London and York is only around 4 hours so was wondering if there are any interesting stopping points along the way.

We are happy to get off the A1/M1 for a more leisurly trip and our interests include castles, churches, cathedrals, quaint villages and gardens. Obviously cannot stop at all of them along the way so looking for some high points.

Thank you.

The most interesting town very close to the A1 is Stamford.:

Old town - attractive buildings - good places to eat and a stately home as well.

<<and a stately home as well.>>

http://www.burghley.co.uk/home. depending on your dates, as house reopens on Saturday 16th March 2013 daily (excluding Fridays) after the winter closedown.

Close to the AI, (can be seen from the A1)

BUT you will need LOTS of time there, as it’s absolutely spectacular!

Wow! Two very prompt responses and both recommending the same place! Thank you. It looks great and unless something more spectacular comes up, will be the one we stop at. Won't be there till May or early June so timing will be fine. And we don't mind getting up early to get there if the destination warrants it and this surely does.

IF you take the M1 (which is the shorter route from Heathrow to York, then you could visit Hardwick House and have a nice lunch at the Hardwick Inn, just off Junction 29:

Half-way-ish though on the M1 route brings you to the level of Leicester - but I would veer off and go and visit Coventry Cathedral - it's fab!

Leicester has a nice-enough Cathedral too, but Coventry IMO is far more interesting.

If using the M1, I second Hardwick Hall,

Also just of the M1, something more industrial, both a few minutes from the M1, http://www.visitmagna.co.uk/science/

or a taste of the mining industry http://www.ncm.org.uk/

I think the Coventry Cathedral is maybe too time consuming off the M1

Near to York http://www.harewood.org/home another magnificent treasure house, not far off the A1(m), which is what the M1 changes too in Yorkshire

Another vote for Stamford. Have lunch at The George.

Thanks to all for your valued suggestions. We have looked at all the websites and my wife has chosen Burghley and Stamford.

If you want a little known cathedral just off your route, visit Southwell Minster, a few miles west of Newark. You'll probably be the only tourists there, but it's worth the detour. In terms of crowds and commercialism, you could hardly get a greater contrast with York Minster.

And another vote for lunch at The George, if you're visiting Stamford.
