Best/Cheapest way to Paddington from Heathrow

Hi Everyone,

We're planning to get to Heathrow from Edinburg mid October and will be in London for 10 more days with a break in the middle in Bath. We're sold on the 7 day travel card with the 2-4-1 deal and plan to buy that with the photo card photos ready to mount in Paddington Station near our lodgings. Since we won't have the travel card to get from LHR to Paddington and since it'll be for zones 1 & 2 anyway, what do you all suggest as the most cost effective way to get from LHR to London Paddington? BTW we land at LHR after 10:00 if anyone wanted to give the two of us a lift! ;-)

The cheapest way would be to get PAYG Oysters - £3 off peak fare, £5 refundable deposit

Others' views will vary, but I would choose the Underground. Depending on your destination near Paddington you have two choices.

First is to take the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith. Alight and walk across the platform for an eastbound District line train. Alight from that train at Earl's Court and again walk across the platform for another District line train towards Edgware Road. Alight at Paddington, where it's step free to the Lawn ticket hall, then an escalator up to the rail station concourse.

The NR ticket office is near platform 1. After having bought your paper Travelcards cross the concourse to the other side of the station where there is a ramp up to Praed Street.

Option two is to take the Piccadilly line to Hyde Park Corner, where you will find an escalator up to the ticket hall. Turn left out of the station for a ramp up to street level at exit 1 Knightsbridge north side. Once in Knightsbridge (the road) walk a little away from the bus stops, wait for a taxi to come by, hail it and take it to your destination.

Cash single fare is £5.70 per person or £3 if you want to use PAYG on Oyster for the single journey.

Best way from Paddington is the Heathrow Express, secondly a chauffeur driven car. If you are on holiday and like to splash out on a nice meal now and again, or a bit of luxury or a easy way of getting to the airport, then it's up to you. Or you can take the tube and save a bit of cash and slum it.

Best way from Heathrow to Paddington is the Heathrow Express

Cheapest reasonable way from Heathrow to Paddington is the underground.

But the best way from Edinburgh to London is by train, and not going anywhere near Heathrow!

Thank you for your answers. There is a considerable cost differential between the Express and the underground but the underground sounds a bit like a treasure hunt. As is always the case, you get what you pay for. We may just figure out how jet lagged we are and let that determine the path we take. Thank you particularly TravellerPlus for your amazingly detailed directions and also for all the other bothersome questions I've asked that you've graciously answered. BTW ComcOb, the tickets are purchased, no turning back and hitting the rails.

scott, the 'treasure hunt' (I rather like that descriptor) looks far more complicated on screen than it is to actually perform.

https:/…Hammersmith_station.jpg This is a westbound Piccadilly line train, but the arrangement is the same for eastbound trains as well. You will alight from (eg) the train shown here and walk to the other side of the platform for the District line train.

At Earl's Court the change from one District line train to another will again be a cross platform change, in this case platforms 1 and 2 to the right in this picture: https:/…27s_Court_District_Line_platforms.jpg This is an old photo, as the mid platform lifts shown as levitating above the platforms are now finished and are operational - but you won't need to use them.

Twenty three minutes of the Underground journey are at or above ground from Heathrow terminals to Earl's Court. If you take the Piccadilly line to Hyde Park Corner then travel time will be 45 minutes. You'll find dedicated space for bags in all Piccadilly line cars: londontoolkit.com/blog/…a.jpg and if you have booked to fly with BA to T5 you will be the first to board the train towards the city centre.

It's up to you how to travel. I don't mind the Underground journey, which for me is to east London. For the most part it's not unpleasant; I'd rather save pounds and spend them elsewhere. Others' MMV.

I'd go for the Heathrow connect, the option Inbetween the tube and express for cost and speed.

Notice only one person suggested HEATHROW CONNECT www.heathrowconnect.com ...seems cheaper than HEATHROW EXPRESS. Presume they're different companies/lines? We'll be flying in from Australia so after our 24 hour flight we just want cheap, direct transport into London! Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Thankyou in advance.

Heathrow connect only runs every 30 minutes, which (in my opinion) makes it a pointless option. If cost is relevant, take the tube. If shorter journey (and hang the cost)is your preference, then take Heathrow Express.

Some of the time saving may be illusory, as the tube runs every five minutes but HEx only runs every fifteen minutes - just miss one and the time saving on HEx starts to evaporate....

The Heathrow Connect is a stopping commuter service that only runs every half hour. Because it uses the connecting link from the airport to the mainline it charges premium fares - though not as premium as the Express. It's still fast - but not as fast as the Express

Its main purpose is to provide a service from the suburbs - Ealing, etc - to the airport. Paddington is because there's nowhere else to (conveniently) turn a train round

Its a compromise for Paddington - some say a satisfactory one, some unsatisfactory
