Safe areas in London

We will be staying in London with our University age children and want to be near transportation but are concerned about safety.. We are looking at apartments in West Kensington and King's Cross. What can you advise regarding safety and transportation?

Where in West Kensington and King's Cross are you considering staying?

Of transportation in the city centre there is a great deal. KX station has six Underground lines plus National Rail and a number of buses to and from the area; West Kensington may not be as well served, but it does depend on the location of the flat.

The same street smarts apply in London as in any large city. You very likely would not walk down a street in Chicago with a wallet halfway out a back pocket, nor should you in London.

A tiresome myth that won't go away is that King's Cross isn't safe. It's b*ll*cks, as KX has changed dramatically in the last 10 years: the new British Library, the refurbishment of St Pancras, KX station (great new Departures hall) and the Kings Place area to the north of the station and a renewed desire by many to live nearer the city centre has made the KX area quite pleasant.

I would choose King's Cross over West Kensington - is it Castletown House you're considering there? - as it's much better situated for sightseeing. If you have links to the flats you've looked at, please post them here as another TALFer may know the flat if not the street or road.
