Gay bars and clubs in London

I will be visiting London this weekend from Friday-Sunday with 3 friends. None of us know anything about the gay scene in London. We would love to know a few good bars/pubs to go to, as well as club recommendations. We'll be staying in the Earl's Court area but I know we will probably want to go to Soho. Anyway, any advice from travelers/locals would be great!

Your first night start off at The Coleherne Pub Earls Court (short walk from Earls Court tube station), and you will be supplied with plenty of information.

Mag info www.timeout.com/london/gay/

Piccadily tube from Earls Court to the West End (Soho), and when your rolling back in the middle of the night, the N97 night bus from Piccadilly Circus to Earls Court.

Assuming you will take in some of Londons culture also :) www.visitlondon.com

Heaven is the most famous gay club in London, but since G-A-Y moved into it from the Astoria it has become very packed as people previously going to two large venues now all go to one. It's still a good night if you like huge clubs, has 3/4 different rooms.

If you do go there go to the G-A-Y bar first, the bar has free entry and they will give you a discount entry wristband for the club. Make sure you ask for one if you aren't offered, as the club has very high walk up ticket prices.

check out http://www.g-a-y.co.uk/ to see who will be performing.

Otherwise soho is packed with gay bars, just wander round! KU Bar is another famous one with a few locations, the chinatown one is best and gets very lively.

Shoreditch is meant to be a more alternative gay scene, but I've never been. Might be worth a look though.

Ref reply 1, the Coleherne has not been gay for years. There are now no gay bars in Earls Court. The mainstream gay bars are overwhelmingly in Soho, though there are a cluster in Vauxhall too. Some (though not all) of the ones in Vauxhall cater for the more leathery-rubbery crowd and naughty goings on are not unknown (this is not possible in Soho where Westminster Council takes a dim view of such things).

There are individual gay bars and clubs scattered around the rest of London, the biggest and most popular probably being XXL on Southwark Street near London Bridge (though this is not open every evening).

If you google 'gay bars London' you will find loads of sites champing at the bit to give information. Here are a couple.

Agree that the 3 main areas are Soho, Vauxhall and Shoreditch - though there are a scattering of other gay pubs / clubs in places like Clapham (The Two Brewers and the Kazbar); Greenwich ; Camden etc....

But you are probably best off staying "central"

In Soho go to Old Compton street and pop into any one of the gay bars there (GAY being the easist to spot) and pick up a copy of Boyz magazine and QX magazine (both are free). They have listings of whats on - and i think one of them also has a map showing the venues.

Soho is a good place to start - venues include:

GAY Bar (and also GAY late which is around the corner) - these are seperate places but owned by the same people who run GAY club at Heaven

The Village

Friendly Society

Profile (and below it Lo-Profile) - bar and club owned by Gaydar

the Edge

The Green Carnation

The Shadow Lounge

Escape

The Duke of wellington

Comptons

Freedom Bar

Circa

The Admiral Duncan

Ku Bar (Frith Street) and Ku Bar (Lisle Street)

Rupert Street

The Yard

......(i've probably forgotten a few as well)

Then as the night goes on you may want to go "proper" clubbing in Vauxhall.

Fire is a popular place but it depends what night is on (check the mags) - there are lots of other big clubs under the arches too.

Duckie at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern is popular on the Saturday (only open till 2am though) and the Eagle is popular on Sundays for Horse Meat Disco.

Shoreditch is popular with the beardy, skinny jeans, vintage vest "fashion set". Popular places are the George and Dragon on Hackney Road; The joiners arms also on Hackney road and East Bloc on City Road (also Dalston Superstore in erm Dalston - but thats a bit out the way)

These are sweaty, rough and ready places. Good fun but definately not "swanky"

Have fun and send me a personal message if you need more info.

oh yes - and I second Iggyfitz XXL recommendation - this is south of the river in between London Bridge and Waterloo Stations. Only open Weds and Saturday at Pulse nightclub. It's for fans of hairy beefcakes.

As has been said above, in general you will find plenty of gay bars in Soho but for later night clubs/experiences (and everything in between) then head down to Vauxhall.

Anyone know which of those Soho pubs would be good for a drink and meal? Pretty much ''just a pub'' Specifically for a middle aged couple not looking for a ''scene''.

If you just want a drink and a meal then you'll probably get better and cheaper going to a 'mainstream' pub.
