Train from Edinburgh to London

Hi we will be taking a train(booking through East Coast UK train website online) with our two teenage boys in August from Edinburgh to London. I was wondering which train stations to pick. Do I choose Edinburgh Waverly? Also, do I just pick the closest London station to our hotel. Finally, is there a big difference between first class and second class. thank you very much!

Unless your Edinburgh accommodation is near Haymarket you need to book from Waverley to London Kings Cross, the terminus of that route. From there you will need tube tickets but the most suitable for you will depend on the amount of time you will be in London, the location of your hotel, the ages of your boys and your departure point and of course what you plan to do but we can "worry" about that in another thread!

There is a difference between First and Standard class. First will give you more room, complimentary food, coffee and (mid week) free wine and beer.

But it isn't really free as you have paid for it via your upgrade.

But you will get far away from the abominable working classes that fester in Standard class which is worth the price of the upgrade straight away.

You don't have a choice of London terminal on this route. The rail booking websites are slightly misleadng - they appear to allow offer you the option to select from a choice of terminals.

In fact, that's a false choice as all EastCoast trains go to London Kings Cross (and Kings Cross only). If you need to get to any other London rail station you will always go to Kings Cross first then take a tube (or bus - or taxi - or walk).

If you book ahead, (www.eastcoast.co.uk) and its only a small amount more, go first, especially at week days where meals and drinks are free. Weekend is a bit more limited in range of food but better all the same; alot more leg room and normally quieter. Sit on the left side of the train heading out of Edinburgh for great views of the coast along Northumbria, Durham Cathedral and York Minster

eastcoast.co.uk are currently open for Advance tickets to 24th August,

If you are willing to commit to a definate train time and pick your time carefully then Advance First Class tickets can sometimes be had for not much more than Standard Class, eg on the 23 Aug Std on East Coast is £36 - £46 on most services, but First is only £49 if you are willing to travel on the Virgin service to Euston (which is quite a lot slower as it's via Glasgow)

However you can't get Family Railcard discount on First class tickets.
