They are legitimate, and owned by Priceline. But, be careful as their headline room rates (that appear in the search results) don't include taxes, which may make them appear cheaper than other sites or the hotel site itself. Make sure you make a dummy booking (go all the way to payment but don't actually buy) to find out the real cost.

I see a price under "booking details"

it says Room Charge $222.36 per night + hotel tax and service fees $44.47-

This screen is where you have to fill in Name & Payment Method and then click Continue .....

is the $44.47 a total for taxes & fees or just a per night figure ??

VAT (tax) is 20%, so the 44 is per night.

It's per night. And it's a perfectly legitimate question as (again) Agoda doesn't make that explicitly clear. There was one of those angry "don't book Agoda" posts a few months back from someone who thought the one night's taxes was for their entire stay.

I must say I'd never heard of Agoda.com, so I tried it out and I am not impressed.

They way they word the taxes and fees makes it sound like it isthe total for the entire stay:

Room charge (per night): 159.48

Hotel tax and service fees: 31.90

(The was for a four night stay). They require you to entire your CC details on that page, without giving you a full total or breakdown. It is also unclear if this is a prepaid room (charged now) or if the CC is just for a guarantee.

By contrast, Orbitz tells you the following before you enter you CC:

Nights 4 Rooms 1: 637.28

Taxes and fees: 103.56

Total due at booking: 740.84

Much clearer and more honest, in my opinion. This was for the same hotel, same rooms, same price. I can see why bookers on Agoda would feel aggrieved at extra fees that weren't well disclosed. All figures in US$.
