easter in London or Paris

We are travelling to Europe in April/May 2011 and are trying to decide whether it is best to be in London or Paris over Easter. Does public transport still run on Good Friday & Easter Sunday ? Do tourist attractions close on either of those days? Any info would be greatly appreciated on either city!

I would vote for Paris - it's beautiful in the Spring - book early to get the hotel you want.

Not sure if things will be closed over the Easter weekend - the rest of France will no doubt be closed but there should still be some touristy stuff open? The Louvre website says it will be open and the Eiffel Tower website says it will be open until midnight on Easter weekend. I assume most other sites will be the same.

As for Public Transport, I wouldn't worry too much - Paris is a very compact city, most attractions are walkable, just bring cofy walking shoes!

The French generally make a bit more of a fuss over easter than the British so there may be more celebrations happening in Paris if that's what you're after?

Pretty much every major tourist sight and attraction in London will be open over Easter. Most will be very busy - the Natural History museum had a line running several hundred yards back towards South Kensington tube last Good Friday.

Shops will be open other than large department stores which will close on Easter Sunday.

Public transport will run to a weekend service although some lines will close either in part or in whole for engineering work which could mean extra time will be needed to get around.

I don't think there's much in it. The weather's approxmately the same in both places (ie typically, sunny intervals with April showers, but could be bright sunshine or freezing drizzle). Transport will be running, though there may be some, mostly minor, reductions in frequency. The risk of closure of selected rail lines for engineering work ("buses replace trains") is pehaps higher in the UK. The risk of strikes is perhaps higher in France. Either way, you get advance notice. All shops wil be open in both places on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and it would be amazing if all tourist sites weren't open as normal also (though you'd have to check churches). On Easter Sunday, exceptionally, the big stores are closed in London as they normally are most Sundays in Paris, On Easter Monday, shops in the UK will definitely be open but in France may well be closed. Against that some museums in France which normally close on Mondays may be open (in the UK they'll be open anyway).

I think the OP is intending to visit both Paris and London, and this is a case of deciding where to be over the Esater weekend itself- which is towards the end of April in 2011.

The main point is that this will be school holiday time in much of Europe so both cities will be very busy; weather is almost the same in both cities. If it is just a timing issue rather than an either/or then not much to choose between them.

A big thanks to everyone who replied..........sounds like there will still be plenty of things to do in either city.
