Pubs/restaurants to stay away from...

You've all consistently come up with numerous places you recommend. Perhaps the list would be much shorter of places to steer clear of? I've jotted down your suggestions, but for the many spur of the moment meals, I'm sure we'll want to pop into the nearest place our tired feet can take us. Are there any pubs or restaurants that stand out as a bad idea altogether?

Yes, that's the only reason - they actually rate the pub, but decided that life is too short to plan the military operation needed to find it!

I guess we'll skip Ye Olde Mitre, then. Wasn't planning on bringing camouflage.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

Most of the chains...Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Subway all get poor marks in my book. I quite like KFC, mind you!

I also really dislike Starbucks. I always think they 'burn' their coffee.

The Punch and Judy is also somewhere I generally avoid.

I always think that if there's an independent restaurant/cafe in an area populated by the big chains they're normally doing something right. The big companies are all after market share so don't worry too much if individual units don't make too much money. So, if a one-man band type place can keep going in the face of such competition they're generally doing OK.

Ye Olde Mitre (closed on weekends) isn't that hard to find and is definitely worth the trip as is St Etheldradas (right next door) if you have the time.

The instructions on how to find Ye Olde Mitre on www.fancyapint.com:

Out of Chancery Lane tube station, go east to Holborn Circus. Hatton Garden is the first road on the left and the Mitre is up an alleyway on the right of the start of Hatton Garden. There's a quaint little signpost indicating the alley.

Or if you would provide me with airfare I would gladly escort you there personally. I will even buy you a pint or two.

DO NOT AVOID Ye Old Mitre. That is crap about Ye Old Mitre. I was walking through Hatton Gardens (we use a car park on Saffron Hill while in London, it's the Rookery's car park of choice) and noticed Ye Old Mitre my first time there. Definitely lovely, very very hidden, and a must see if you love the movie "Snatch"!

If you're walking south down Hatton Gardens it's on the left side of the street. There's a sign. It's not difficult.

Afterwards go for dinner at the Bleeding Heart on Greville Street. Marvelous!!!

Have to say Spicy World in Victoria was a huge disappointment for us....both the food and the prices! Also, there seemed to be something "going on" there with the owners/workers...it is hard to explain but there was alot of conversation both on mobile phones and between the workers (of course I couldn't understand the language) and alot of coming and going...really strange....or maybe it was just our imagination!

I just wanted to add my 2p worth about Ye Olde Mitre. How they can say it's hard to find when there are 2 signs on a lamp post directly by the alley leading to Ye Olde Mitre that also have an arrow pointing the way.

I went there tonight for the first time in a few years and found it with no problem. Saw the lampost with the signs on it before I saw the alley. The bonus is that they do one of my favourite beers, Adnams Boardside.
