It will get dark around 4pm by then, as it is very close to the shortest day of the year. As for weather, that is not very predictable. It will be quite cold and very possibly wet. We have had a little snow in London today, but that is the first time we have had snow in October since 1934. The advice is always to be prepared for anything, except a heatwave. Cold, dry, bright days in London are wonderful.

Bang goes my standard reply - "it probably won't snow".

Basically expect anything and carry a range of garments so that you cope with anything from below zero Celcius to around 20 Celius.

Definitely bring something waterproof as being wet in the UK in winter (well most of the year actually) will ensure you will be totall miserable.

Also get a hat, scarf & gloves as they are one of the easiest ways to control your temperature as you go from outside, onto the Tube, into a shop and out again

Alan: caught out at last!

The only true answer is "we haven't a clue"! Layers! Layers! Layers"

BUT don't forget we have shops in London; some of them very cheap and still reasonable quality. Whether you shop "designer" or cheap, you will be able to buy very easily anything you didn't bring from bikinis (prob not needed!) to scarves, gloves, hats, thermal wear, raincoats, "wellie" boots, umbrellas (often found on trains for free), etc.

Was in London Dec 2007 for 15 days. Absolutely no rain (lucky me) and O*C to 8*C. And reminder: the Tube shuts down on Christmas day.

Virtually everything in the UK shuts on Christmas Day - which basically means you have to pre-book your food for that day and it will have to be somewhere walkable from your hotel - unless you want to pay really expensive taxi fares.
