From (London to) Nottingham to Lake District - TOUGH QN

Hi all,

we've been trying to sort out this transport issue the whole weekend. Need some help desperately.

During our stay in London, we'll be taking a train to Nottingham to meet some relatives for the weekend on Sat, 11th June. We've purchased rail tickets on Midland Mainline. That's no problem-costs us 30pounds each (return). We're quite pleased with the purchase.

However, for 12th June (Sunday) we thought of taking a day-tour up to Lake District from Nottingham and joining a tour which starts there (instead of one which starts from LONDON cos it's cheaper). We've been searching the VirginRail website for tickets but can't seem to find suitable options. Help!!

Anyone has any ideas how we can get this worked out?

Is Lake District worth the trouble in the first place?

What's the name of the train station in Lake District?

Thanks all for helping.

If you can get to Manchester then use First North West trains direct to Windermere. this station is at the end of a branch line from Oxenholme - The Lake District which is on the main London to Glasgow line.

So try the train times to Manchester then those from Manchester to Windermere via Oxenholme. And, the Lake District is always worth the trouble, it is stunningly beautiful.

This is not a practical journey. Even on week days, it is 3h45m to 4hr30m journey from Nottingham to Windermere, involving changes in Manchester or Crewe and Oxenholme. On Sundays, with fewer trains, it becomes impossible. Like 7+ hours each way, with 4 change of trains.

Why not go to the Peak District national park instead - it's much closer and gorgeous.

This is a great site when you want to try to plan a complicated journey, using public transportation:

travelinesoutheast.org.uk/se/…

You can even print out maps, showing your walk to the tube, or from a train station to some site you want to go to at your destination.
