Advice for taking a train from London to Southampton please

A friend and I are booked on a cruise leaving Southampton and we have a reservation the night before departure in a hotel there. We need to figure out how to travel from London to Southampton via train. I have been on www.goeuro.com and the ticket prices range from 21 euro to 98 euro. Why the huge difference in prices when these trains leave the same station (Waterloo) ten minutes apart? Is anyone familiar enough with this route to explain the differences so we can make an informed decision please? Thank you so much

What site are you looking at? You probably should not be seeing prices in Euros

Book on the official UK site so you don't pay extra fees & charges You certainly shouldn't be paying in euros - the UK is not in the Eurozone!

As an alternative have you considered taking a bus from Victoria Coach station to Southampton?

We purchased 2 tickets for 15 pounds. The ride takes 2 hrs. and 15 minutes.

Website is national express.

Further to the excellent advice given above, to try to address your ticket price variation question. There are peak and off peak hours where you are incentivised to take quieter, off peak trains by lower prices. The second equation is if you buy an inflexible, cheap ticket or a flexible but more expensive ticket. The cheapest tickets - when available - are called “advance” and restrict you to your selected departure (and they are not available as a walk-up ticket - you have to book in “advance”)

You can buy via www.nationalrail.co.uk up to 12 weeks in advance and collect the tickets later From anyvststion with a ticket machine.

There can also be price differences between the two rail carriers Southern and Southwestern railways that go to Southampton. Each take different routes, one is slower because of the route and thus is typically cheaper. If time is not critical you can save a few pounds. .

My girlfriend use to go Southampton uni, found it fairly cheap going from Clapham Junction to Southampton, took about 45 mins to an hour. About £15-£20 about 8 years back.

There are many reasons which can explain the variation in prices that can be found in the UK for rail journeys. There are several ticket types available to start with. Anytime tickets are the most expensive, and the most flexible in terms of the time of day you can travel.

Then there are more restricted walk up tickets , plus highly the restricted Advance tickets. The latter may not be available for every journey, or every train, and they are very sensitive to demand, coming in different price tiers.

On top of that, there may be different routeings available, and different operator specific tickets in addition to those that are inter available. Add in railcards, and all sorts of other offers and products, and it's easy to see why visitors and residents who are not regular rail users can be overwhelmed, if not bewildered, by it all.
