Super Casino

Will Blackpool win the right to site the Super casino? Is the bid strong enough?

Decision is due at the end of January?

If it does what will it mean for the town, where will it be built?

In a way I hope it goes to Glasgow....London has enough going for it already and Blackpool seems to have a number of interested parties wanting to re establish Blackpool as a family resort. Storm City are my favourite at the moment.

Lego Land are also interested in building a smaller version of their Windsor theme park...but its said that Lego Land are interested regardless of the casino outcome.

lol @ Mrs B... lots of opinions yes but they're always very well informed and interesting. Above all honest which is why I think people appreciate them on here !

At one stage I really hoped Blackpool would get the Casino. Now I'm not so sure. Like Mrs B says developments like Legoland and Storm City look like they might go ahead regardless. You've also got the town centre being completely changed, even Pricebusters now is expanding !!

At the same time you have places like Sandcastle being voted best water park in the world and of course every new ride at the Pleasure Beach brings in loads of punters (even if strictly speaking this latest one isn't exactly "new").

2007 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for the town !

(besides, the UK government seems incapable of realising there is a Britain outside the perimeter of the M25 so I would bet my mortgage on it going to London)

Not really a journo interest Mrs Bouquet. I am considering moving to that part of the world next year (the wife wants to be closer to her parents, we are currently in London) and am curious about various aspects of the Town. I have only visited the town for short spells a couple of times over the last year or so so am using various resources to discover as much as I can.

Its possible but by no means definite that as part of this move I will be investing some money in the tourist industry. Some reports paint the town in a bad light, some not so bad. Some seem to be suggesting that if Blackpool doesn't get the casino it is headed to oblivion. I have read reports about the Lego land and Storm City schemes and they are of course positive although the Storm City development seemed to suggest that it is dependent on a successful casino bid.

How do you see the town evolving over the next few years? You are not keen on the casino coming, so presumably you are not to bothered about the impact good or bad, it will have on your business?

Thanks to the other posters for the info, I am familiar with the planned site close to the police station. That whole area could do with some sort of redevelopment. No wonder the operator of Coral Island was one of the strongest voices against the casino in Blackpool it will effectively be right on their doorstep.

The super casino would be a massive boost for Blackpool. I know that there are other projects that say they are going ahead regardless but they might just back off if the Casino goes to the Governments preferred site (The Dome). There are always those who are anti casino and pro family but Blackpool has to cater for more than that. What about the thousands of couples of all ages who used to visit but are now driven away by the gangs of sub humanites masquerading as stag and hen parties. We have to get rid of them first and it is unlikely that any company will invest £300 to £500 million in a casino unless they have some sort of assurance that the behaviour of this type of visitor is more rigorously policed. We want the couples back as well because they don't have to work around term times and can visit Blackpool when they feel like it. Don't anybody make the mistake of thinking that Blackpool will flourish regardless. It might in the long term but I will probably be bankrupt by then. This licence will be the catalyst for quick regeneration and an instant fillip for local commercial property values. As a matter of interest VC Bet and others have closed their books on the licence award which means that there was either no interest or the result has become a foregone conclusion. Betfair still have a book on it and currently shows Blackpool at about 4/6 with the Dome at 1/1 and the rest nowhere. It is however a very thin book with less than £6000 wagered so far.

Betfair is an Interesting and novel bookmaking idea.

To be fair of the £5k + wagered most of it £2777 (almost half) has gone on Blackpool.

The dome shows less only £2062, although it would appear this is only a 2 horse race.

Isn't the clue of where the smart money (albeit only a little under £6k) is going in the criteria the casino advisory panel will use to evaluate proposals?

Quote:

However, the primary criterion, as laid down by the Secretary of State is to ensure that locations satisfy the need for the best possible test of social impact (which may require a range of locations of different kinds such as seaside resorts, edge of town developments or inner city centres). Subject to that, the Secretary of State has also asked the Panel;

* to include areas in need of regeneration (as measured by unemployment and other social deprivation data) and which are likely to benefit in these terms from a new casino;

* to ensure that those areas selected are willing to license a new casino.

Stratford is right across the river from Greenwich. They already have the Olympics although as has been mentioned in this thread this is not a universally welcomed decision locally, however the investment needed for the 2012 event will undoubtedly benefit Greenwich due to it's proximity.

The unknown factor of course is Prescott and him looking after his mates.

Yes I have read a lot of this so called report which is based on facts? from the USA, Australia and others. I personally think it's a load of rubbish which seems, on the one hand, to favour Blackpool but on the other hand favour the Dome. It also manages to rule out both of these front runners for one reason or another. It is a poloticians dream report. They can take iot any way that it suits them and find something in it to back up their choice. The Denver Business Journal had this to say about it last week.

"A recently published, 92-page research report for the Casino Advisory Panel, which will recommend where the single super-casino should be to government ministers, suggests the London venue would be the best place for the casino from social and economic perspectives.

The report says the casino should be located away from areas frequented by children and teenagers, and The 02 is on the Greenwich Peninsula near London.

The research also stated that the casino's success would be enhanced by being part of a larger entertainment complex. The 02, being developed by the Denver businessman's Anschutz Entertainment Group Inc. (AEG) in Los Angeles, is the redevelopment of the Millennium Dome and is slated to include other entertainment-oriented components such as a movie theater, performance venue, hotel and restaurants.

AEG partner Kerzner International Ltd. of the Bahamas would build, own and operate the casino, if The 02 gets the nod for it. The 02 is under construction, and is expected to open in July 2007.

But the Casino Advisory Panel's chairman, Stephen Crow, recently warned readers of the report not to read too much into it. "The intention was that this background research work would assist in the scoping phase of our work," Crow said in a statement. "It has not been relied upon in reaching our conclusions."

Make what you will of it but the Government is desperate for a reason to award it to the Dome.

I diont think the casino will have an impact on my hotel - ive asekd most of my guests for their opinions and most of them are quite indifererent. It wouldnt stop them visiting Blackpool but it wouldnt encourage them if they werent doing already. But as with all rgeneration, depending on what is actually decided, the visitor profile will change anyway - therefore I will target my advertising and attract according to the market changes.

Hens and stags have tpo be stopped though, no doubt about that!

Geezer, if you do decide to move here let the forum know. It seems that most of us on here come from differernt area of the resort and will have advice on various areas.
