Planning a trip to Windermere by train, advice please?!

I am thinking about going on a short break for my 25th b'day, just over the weekend in May, arrive there friday eve and return on sunday.

As I am going by train I ideally would like a b&b or hotel quite near to the train st. Plan to just walk around and relax and would also like to visit some places but not sure how it is like getting about on foot/public transport wise.

So any suggestions/recommendation on places/attractions and where to stay would be appreciated. :)

There are lots of places to stay in the centre of Windermere which will be close to Train Stn. This end of town is not actually right on the lake though. The southern end of Windermere village becomes Bowness on Windermere - closer to the lake, and to ferry accross to Hawkeshead and the Lake cruise boats. Its a bit of a walk from the station to the Bowness end, but only a few mins in a taxi. Lots of walks all around in every direction, if you are taking your boots. You can take the rope ferry accross to the far side of the lake and there are several walks from there - a world away from the crowds at Bowness.

The area is well served by public transport.

For places to stay check out the Cumbria Tourist Board website at http://www.golakes.co.uk/

also has links to transport info.

For some walking ideas look at the following website.

Hope you have a great time.

Public transport links are really good actually. The advantage with staying in Windermere over Bowness is that you will be close to the train station where all the buses stop. Stagecoach buses can be picked up here to take you to Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston, Grasmere and Keswick etc. There are special tickets available depending on what you want to do and see including all inclusive tickets for a day. You can hop on or off at the many stops along the route and also go on a cruise on Lake Windermere which is included. The 599 bus runs every 20 mins and is an open-topped bus which runs a circuit from Bowness to Grasmere via Windermere Train station.

Mountain Goat tours in Windermere do loads of trips around the Lakes which may enable you to see more in a shorter time than using public buses.
