Best town to stay in

Hi,

Two of us are traveling to the Lake District in early June. We will not have a car - totally relying o train transportation. Which town(s) have a train station and is best for lodging. Thanks.

Windermere has a train station with many b&b 's and hotels with walking distance.

Windermere is the only town in the Lake District with a train station, alternatively you can get a train to Penrith and then a bus or taxi into the National Park. Depends where you are coming from and whereabouts you want to stay really.

If you are relying on public transport the most convenient places would probably be Windermere/Bowness, Ambleside or Keswick. There are numerous B&B's and hotels in all those places.

Many thanks. I read that Oxenholm is a main train station - is it not centrally located?

No, it isn't. I'd recommend Keswick, but you'll to get a bus to get there.

Oxenholme is on the main west coast train line so you'll probably need to change trains to Windermere at Oxenholme or get a bus to somewhere like Keswick. If you've not been to the Lakes before and don't have a car I'd suggest staying around Windermere/Ambleside area. They can be busy and touristy but in early June it shouldn't be too bad and that will give you good transport links and a choice of accommodation (plus shops and places to eat within walking distance of where ever you stay).

Windermere is the only town within the Lake District with a train station, but it's not the best place to stay IMHO. Over-touristy and not surrounded by the best scenery.

Keswick is a much nicer place to stay, and is reasonably well served by buses. You can take the train to Penrith and then continue your journey to Keswick by either bus or taxi.

And the bus service from Penrith to Keswick gives the feeling of a little adventure!
