Personally i would choose Ambleside. It offers some good pubs (Sports pub),restaurants like Zeffirellis and Fellinis, seeing a film and watching live music in the jazz bar.I highly recommend "Zeffirellis.

There are nice hotels in Ambleside and Guest Houses.

Whilst in Ambleside take a look at a shop called "Relish"

Enjoy your night out.

Cockermouth has the best (proper) pub crawl in the lakes, bar none. The Castle Bar is a good all-rounder, smartly refurbished and is next to an excellent Asian restaurant. The Bitter End currently sells local beers for £2 a pint and The Bush is more traditional still. Add in a late night place (the name escapes me), a brewery tour during the day, a complete absence of cagoule-wearing day-trippers plus friendly locals and you have a pretty good night out.
