route from north to south

We are 2 couples in early 50's and are travelling from Scotland down into North Wales and wishing to stop over in southern side of lake district in a scenic area and also have a pleasant day driving from north to south.

Could you please advise a memorable route

As you are only wishing to drive through the Lakes prhaps we should keep you on the main road?

This will give you the chance to stop in places along the way such as Keswick, the viewpoint at Thirlmere, perhaps pop into Grasmere Village then see Rydal Water, drive through Ambleside, and Windermere. Then perhaps take the car ferry across to Hawkshead and down into the South Lakes for an overnight stop. Or if you want to stay on the main road then stay overnight in Windermere or Bowness before rejoining the M6 to go south off the M6 at Penrith and make your way towards North Wales.

This should ensure that you don't tray too far off the beatn track and you will drive past some great celery and there will be plenty of opportunity to stop off for strolls, teas, along the way?

There re other routes going over Hardknott Pass or even driving down the Duddon Valley to Broughton in Furness and then on for the Southern Lake District.

Have a wee think about this and check it out on the map If you need something more specific after that just let me know.

But that should at least get you started

leuca has given you a very good post.

If you decide to spend 2-3hrs in Keswick, view the small town, then head to Keswick boat landing stage and take a trip on Derwent Water Lake cruisers, cruise lasts 50mins.Enjoy the views.

For some fun, head to Hope Park,5mins from boat landing stage and enjoy a game of crazy golf or pitch & putt or maybe relax on a bench in the park and enjoy the flower beds.

You may like to stop at Rydal Mount and Gardens.

Enjoy your trip.
