Where should I stay?

Where should I stay?

I'm flying into London and spending a night before I continue to Southampton to catch a cruise. Any suggestions on where I should overnight? I won't have a car so I'm looking for something with food, shops, and attractions nearby. London itself, Winchester, Salisbury, and Portsmouth have been suggested to me. Which of those areas would be better or does anyone have another idea? Thanks so much!

1. Re: Where should I stay?

You haven't mentioned what time of day you land and when you need to check in for your cruise or what your interests are.

All of your options are possible but all apart from Winchester are not on the route between the airport and Southampton so would involve extra travelling.

London hotels are expensive and London is too big to do in a day - especially if feeling jet lagged.

Salisbury and Portsmouth are good if you particularly want to see Stonehenge or HMS Victory and the dockyard.

Winchester is a small town with a variety of places of interest within walking distance of the city centre hotels so you can do as much or as little as you feel comfortable with after your flight with only a short onward journey to Southampton.

Thank you so much for your insight! I'll be arriving late morning and the ship will sell late the next afternoon. I enjoy shopping and eating (smile) although others in my party like a variety of things - sightseeing, museums, historical buildings. Can you give me some idea of the time or distance between London and Winchester and Winchester to Southampton? It sounds as if Winchester has a little something for everyone and it's centrally located to where I need to be.

Heathrow to Winchester takes around 1.5 hours with National Exprees coach and £14.30 per person (£7.40 if over 60) http://www.nationalexpress.com

Winchester to Southampton takes 15-20 minutes by train (£5.50) though it may work out cheaper (depending on party size) and easier to get a taxi direct to the docks from Winchester

I haven't used these taxi firms myself so can't comment on service

I think that Winchester is a good option for you, it has a little of everything on offer so should suit your group.

I work nearby to Winchester and travel to Heathrow on a regular basis by Taxi. I can recommend the following 2 taxi companies:

Phipps Taxis:

For a Luxury Transfer:

Email: sales@distinguishedcarriages.co.uk

I would like to endorse what the others have said - Winchester would certainly sound like your ideal stopover. If you stay in the centre, pretty much everything is within walking distance - historic sites including the Cathedral, shops and good restaurants.
