Portsmouth Southsea/Portsmouth

My daughter and I will be spending the night in Portsmouth before taking the ferry to Le Havre. There are tickets available from London Victoria Station to Portsmouth Southsea at a convenient time for 10 pounds for the two of us, 1/10 the cost to Portsmouth. But I can't figure out why they're so cheap. Is the station far from the hotels and ferry terminal? Is it in a scary neighborhood we'll be lucky to get out of alive? Or is it just so far in advance (6 weeks) that cheap tickets are still available?

They are cheap for two reasons - one they are advance purchase valid on the booked train only. (These particular ones don't sell out that quickly - some are available for tomorrow). Secondly the route out of Victoria is about half an hour slower than the main route out of Waterloo and Southern want to attract customers

Why they should be available to Portsmouth and Southsea and not Portsmouth Harbour - don't know, unless you have misunderstood. There's no reason for them not to be available to both.

Oh and by booking on http://www.southernrailway.com/ they will be cheaper still

Portsmouth & Southsea station (known locally as the town station) is around 2 miles from the Continental Ferry Port. Portsmouth Harbour station is about the same distance (not a great deal in it) and no, neither of them are in "scary" areas. As for hotels, which one were you thinking of?

Thanks for the information. I think we can take an extra half hour on the train to save that much money. As for hotels, I haven't even begun to think about that. We'll only be there from 9:30 p.m to 7:00 a.m. or so, so clean and close are more important than scenic grounds and grandeur.

Any suggestions appreciated!

You could stay anywhere in Portsmouth/Southsea, as the private taxis are cheap to use.

The nearest is the Travelodge Portsmouth, you could walk to the ferry from here if you wanted to.

Normally the cheapest but not as close, Etap Hotel Portsmouth from £28 for 3 people

£3 50 cab fare from Fratton station, £7.00 to ferry in the morning.

If you book early lots of the chain hotels offer a good discount.

Please use trip advisor to CHECK REVIEWS, before booking somewhere to stay.
