Ideas for Cotswold Day Trip

Hello,

We have recently relocated to the UK, outside London and are taking day trips to explore the areas.

I am at a loss though, with where to start in the Cotswolds.

If you had a day for a first trip, with the goal of seeing some lovely areas, quint villages, historic sites and welcoming pubs, where would you start?

What route would the trip take?

We would like to get out and walk a bit but not necessarily hike the Way.

Suggestions are most welcome, as we are hoping to head there this weekend or next.

We would be coming from our Reading way.

Thanks,

~jelliclegypsy

Blenheim Palace (the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) is in the town of Woodstock where you will find some very nice places to eat. It is then only a short drive to Bladon where he is buried. There is a pub in Bladon opposite the churchyard called "The White House". The food there is very good and there is a strong association to the Churchill family.

Broadway, Chipping Campden and Bourton-on-the-Water are all lovely places.

Not the Cotswolds, but have you considered seeing the manor where Downton Abbey is filmed?

There are some wonderful books that will give you some ideas for circular walks beginning and ending at a pub--these can be lovely. I would go to a bookstore and do some browsing.

Take a look at this site for all the info you need

http://www.cotswolds.info

I would personaly recommend driving to Oxford then taking the A 40 to Burford, first nice place to stop. Then on along the A40 to Northleach, turn right onto the A429 (Fosse Way...follows the route of the old roman road) to next stop at Bourton-on-the-water. Wonderfull place either side of the river, picturesque and with pubs, shops and nice walks etc. Then when you have had your fill, carry on up the Fosse way to next stop in Stow-in-The-Wold. From there take the A424 to Broadway, another little gem. (Look for Stanway House and Gardens)

Thats a good little trip but there are plenty more villages, country parks etc in this area. You will find yourself comming back to see more I bet.

A little further past Broadway is Hidcote Gardens, which are quite something.

Hi Laura,

I see you are an ExPat too.

Thanks for the notes on my post; do you have any other tips for an ExPat?

Vic...

Thanks for the route!

I've just mapped it and that is exactly what I was looking for.

It gives me a place to start and will provide just a taste of the area.

I agree with you; we will be returning to explore more of the Cotswolds.

Thank you,

Don't know if it is too far of a trek, but look into joining American Women of Berkshire and Surrey.

http://www.awbs.org.uk/

They have a lot of lectures, walks, and other activities. They also do some marvelous philanthropic work. You meet not only Americans, but an entire international community. Including plenty of English members!

Well Laura,

I may meet you soon then as I have joined the AWBS.

I just missed the last meeting.

We are in the southern most tip of Oxfordshire just over the line from Berkshire.

Thanks for the tip!
