Okehampton 3 hours to kill

We, OH & Me have got 3 hours to spare on a friday between 2 & 5, having arranged for our kids to do an activity at the youth hostel all afternoon. Not averse to a bit of walking, cream tea etc, Any ideas for walks, will have already done the Granite Way (weather permitting!), or any "must - see" attractions?

Thanks

Hi

I'm not very familiar with Okehampton, but looking at the things to do section for it - tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g551651-Activi… - there are some great sounding things to do, including the castle, the Finch Foundry, and the vineyard. It depends what takes your fancy. I'm sure someone more familiar with the area can come up with something more specific, and there are bound to be some terrific walks around there considering the location.

i would head for Belstone or Sticklepath, ideally armed with an OS Landranger map which shows the footpaths so you can do a circular walk. Belstone has a pub The Tor and good walks and views. Sticklepath has 2 pubs and a tea room behind the Finch Foundry. From this tea room you can go over the bridge of the River Taw and walk along the river and then back along country lanes. If weather bad then the Finch Foundry is well worth a visit which includes guided tour I think. Better check opening times first.

Do you have access to either a 4x4 or robust car? if so head up onto the moor via Okehampton army camp and take in some of the bleakest moorland in the area. We managed this drive in an MG sports car a few years ago, but think road surfaces have deteriorated since then, and we did get temporarily stuck on a tank trap! You can do a bit of walking if you have a decent map and some proper clothing. Check army not firing.

Okehampton Castle is good if you like such things, Lydford Gorge and Castle only 30 mins from Oke if you have enough time.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life in a courtyard off the high street in Okehampton is small but fascinating. www.museumofdartmoorlife.org.uk/

Or have a go at letter boxing. Hidden all over Dartmoor are small containers with a stamp and a visitors book. When found, people take a print of the stamp and leave a note in the visitor book. http://www.dartmoorletterboxing.org/ http://www.letterboxingondartmoor.co.uk/ http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~have.feet/boxing/boxing.html
