Valentines Day in Looe

We are booked to go to Looe next week for 2 x nights over Valentines Day - Friday and Saturday - but are concerned about all the flooding.

Is it still very bad there?

The hotel says it will still put us up but I am wonderin what there is to do if the High Street is flooded.

Any help - gratefully received - thank you.

The town has flooded a few times lately due to high tides, strong winds which have been too much for the harbour defences. The water soon subsides when the tide goes out and things have to be cleaned up. Looe is prepared for flooding but not on this scale. Most businesses that are open this time of year will be open and they need support if you are here. Some will be shut as part of their winter plan anyway.

So, rest assured, Looe won't be flooded as its just tidal which if it were to happen while you are there, it soon gets back to normal.

Very confident... So you've looked up the high tides for next year then?

The problem is actually Looe has no harbour defences, the main street is below sea level on a high tide when combined with heavy rain from days before swelling the 2 Looe rivers. it is the drainage which is the problem as the sea water comes back up through the drains. But nonetheless as the poster says it does subside once the tide goes out but then can come back again 12.5 hrs later when the next high tide is due. It might be unlikely but I wouldn't personally commit to saying it won't flood whilst you are there as flooding is relatively common in Looe...
