Cottage rental

We are wanting to rent a cottage in a quiet village preferably on the coast wiith sea views for 3-5 months March-June 2007 to use as a base for touring. There seems to be ample holiday lets, how do I go about securing a longer term without locking in to a 12 month lease? Should I contact a local estate agent, any referrals would be appreciated. Jenny.

Depending where in Berkshire they are (IE. access to M5 or A303) then they would be in the ball park of 2.5 to 3 hours from 'Cornwall' (by that I mean Bodmin area having crossed the county line - where you're headed from there is very variable)

To go check somewhere like Mousehole which is pretty much right down the end (Land End about 10-15 mins drive away)

Google Map suggests it's 272 miles and over 6 Hours.

Pick your time right and it should be much less than that!

theaa.com suggests it is nearer 5 hours 20 mins.

Glad you're not discouraged - is not the intention of people on here - will by trying merely to help you avoid pitfalls :-)

"Joe, is the distance from Berks-Cornwall problematic, I would anticipate them having a short winter stay to check out, it would be a bit cheeky to have them roll up to the front door for a peek!"

Well, a short winter stay would be the most practical way of doing it, it would be an extremely long day otherwise, as I said you may well appreciate this but sometimes you see people from outside the UK looking at a map and thinking a distance like this is maybe a 2 hr drive, rather than 5hr or so. (IME Texans and Australians seem most prone to this :-)

Cornish Pastie & Joe you are being so helpful, thank you. Yes, we are Australians who do appreciate the reality of distance, try checking out the size of Tasmania, and our horror at UK or US travellers who think they can "do" Tas in a week They spend the entire stay in their hire car, such a waste. We recommend 2 weeks to experience the whole island. Take a look at "discovertasmania.com.au" to see our beautiful clean green island.

One of the reasons for our wish to stay 3-4 months in one spot is to try to experience real English village life - not that we kid urselves that we will be considered locals, bu we would hope to at least find ways of socialising and hopefully contribute something along the way.

Drinks are on us when we finally arrive to frighten you all!

Hello Jenny,

I also live in the wonderful state of Tamania, and am busy planning our trip next year to England. We lived in Bodmin Cornwall for the first 7 years of our marriage, our children were born in Truro. To celebrate 25 years since our departure, we are planning our trip for next April. I am so excited to see all the changes, Bodmin and Cornwall will always hold a special place in my heart. You will truely love it, the countryside is amazing, saying that Tasmania always reminds me of the west country, I think that is why we adopted Tasmaina 7 years ago from Western Australia.

Enjoy your adventure.

Where you might strike lucky is with a cottage that the owners like to use themselves in the school summer holidays, ie July and August. It might be worth contacting www.helpfulholidays.co.uk who act as agents for individual owners throughout the south-west. Also you might look at www.ownersdirect.co.uk - as you can contact owners & try to strike a deal.

Thank for further contacts everyone, am investigating.

Amazing to hear from Dodges in Tasmania, are you staying with relatives or renting acommodation?
