camping on alderney

any reviews to offer on the campsite? Also - has anyone travelled on the freight ship (Channel Seaways) with a camping trailer or similar? How was the six hour boat trip from Poole? We heard a rumour that Alderney is getting a bit wild with yobs in certain places at night - surely this can't be true? Would appreciate any tips for the holiday next summer - first visit and has to match up to four wonderful years on the Isles of Scilly!

many thanks

Will report back after our trip in September. When I lived on Alderney (1972-4) camping was pretty basic on Saye Farm! Sounds as if things have moved on a bit.

Speaking to a friend I am going to see, the island is pretty quiet these days.

Will post a trip report in due course.

Thanks for that

How are you travelling? Do you have a camping trailer? We are thinking about travelling with the trailer on the freight boat which takes 6 hours from Poole direct to Alderney - this would also solve how to take the dogs.

Some feed back on your return would be great - many thanks!

I camped on Alderny's campsite once and wasn't too impressed...

Very basic, hardly any places a bit more private, the shop is not impressively stocked..and so on.

There are villages shops about 10 minute cycle away.

The island is ridden with old cars left to rot.

Okay, so I was there during some fairly rainy days, but all in all, I would recommend camping on one of the other islands.....

I'm not sure if trailers are allowed on the island or even if you could get them on a freight boat? Better ask first....

You can take your dogs on the ordinary ferry to the islands, but then you would have to fly on to Alderney. I've seen a dog boarding that plane, so that might be a possibility for you if your heart is really set on that particular island...

Which island has the best campsite, nearest the sea (pref. with sea views), quiet, near a nice cafe (!) not too large - bring our own tent/trailer.

Thanks

Herm, Herm, Herm......

is my favourite ^_^ >>> oh, but no dogs allowed..so that's a no go for you...

no trailers on the islands, ecept for Jersey.

This year, I plan to spend a few night on Rozel, Jersey which is pretty close to cliffs as well.

Sark is nice and quiet, I'm not sure about dogs, though, You'd have to ask.

Here are links to all campsites:

(dogs allowed, nice people, but not esp close to cliffs...)

(again, I don't think Alderney will match the Scilly Isles, which are still on my wish list as well...:D )

Looks like Saye Farm hasn't changed much in almost forty years! I'd research it carefully, looks as if it might not be what you are expecting.

thanks to everyone - looks like it's back to the drawing board - wish the Isles of Scilly wasn't so expensive to get to; it's going to be so hard to match - our favourite place on earth.

Well, the Channel Islands will make a pretty good alternative.

If you decide on Guernsey, you can do plenty of island hopping.

as for Jersey, I think Rozel makes for a nice place to stay as well....very close to the cliffs. (I can let you know in a few days:

Edit:

some of my post got lost....

durrell has an interesting offer going:

Did have a look at Saye when on the island, and in fact took a photo, not sure how I add them to a post. It is all pretty basic presumably for people who like that kind of thing. It is very close to Saye Bay which is beautiful. No Ro-ro so I don't think you'll be able to take a car/trailer, just about everyone travels by air unless they have their own boat.
