Day trip by train from London to Ely and Cambridge

My husband and I will be staying in London for a week next May, and we'd like to take a train to Ely one day. Our plan is to go directly to Ely from London in the morning, see the cathedral, then take the train back to Cambridge and do a little sightseeing there. From Cambridge we will return to London. We would prefer to not have to travel at reserved times, but be able to come and go when we wish. Should we try to purchase our tickets before our trip, or is it practical (and affordable) to just buy the tickets the day of our travel so we'll have more flexibility? Thanks in advance for any help. We are novices to train travel, so are learning as we go!

The ticket you want is called an off-peak day return. You can't travel before 9.30 in the morning

If you travel before 9.30am Mon - Fri your ticket will be £49.50 per person return. Travel after 9.30am then your ticket will be around £25 per person.

Travel at the weekend and it doesn't matter what time you travel, your ticket will be around £25 per person.

From London Kings Cross get the train for Kings Lynn that goes at quarter to or quarter past the hour, don't get any of the other ones as they are stopper trains and take much longer. The Kings Lynn train will get you to Ely in around 1hr 10mins.

Purchase your ticket on the day, you don't get any savings booking in advance.
