Alternative and Cheaper Train Route to Gatwick from Dover

My husband and I are looking at an alternative, and cheaper train route to Gatwick from Dover on a Friday afternoon in October. We do not want to go into London. I found this route; Dover Priory to Tonbridge, Tonbridge to Redhill, Redhill to Gatwick. Can anyone comment on how easy this would be? We will not have much for luggage (easily manageable) but I noticed that some of the times between arriving and leaving are very short (4 mins). Have you done this route? Is it easy and quick to change trains?

Thank you for all of your suggestions and information.

It's both cheaper and quicker to go via Tonbridge and Redhill. You should only need a few minutes to change trains at these smaller stations, but there is always a chance that a train might be a bit late. If that happens you will just need to wait for the next one. No big deal as long as you are not cutting it fine to catch a plane.

We are not flying out until the next morning so just going to the hotel near the airport. Do you know if it would be a long wait if we miss a connection? Thanks!

The basic service pattern for direct trains from Tonbridge to Redhill is once an hour. From Dover to Tonbridge and from Redhill to Gatwick, trains run more frequently still. The one point worth checking is whether there's planned engineering work, particularly at weekends, in which case journeys can take much longer. For instance, this Sunday there are no direct Tonbridge-Redhill trains and instead there's a bus which takes 1 hour 20 minutes instead of 35 minutes on the train. The best place to check is on nationalrail.co.uk which I guess may be where you found information about your proposed route in the first place.

The journey planners build in enough time for normal connections and will not suggest an impossible journey.

Some of the journey planners have an option for 'allow extra time for connections'

This connection basically runs hourly, governed by the frequency from Tonbridge to Redhill.

The short connection is usually at Tonbridge but you should only have to cross a platform between trains.

At Redhill you might have to wait on the same platform or you might have to use the subway (with lifts that sometimes work). Redhill to Gatwick has a frequent service.
