Short trip from London to Cornwall

Hi, I am planning a whirlwind trip down to Cornwall from London in June next year. I only have 5 days which I know is kind of ridiculous but Id like to see as much as possible before flying home to Australia. Im not interested in stopping for long lunches etc and with very early starts, I think I can do it. I would like to know if my plan sounds doable!!

Day 1 - Paddington Station to Bristol by train then hire a car. Drive to Clovelly (hopefully avoiding the busy motorways) to spend a couple of hrs. Then onto Tintagel for my 1st night.

Day 2 - Tour Tintagel castle then onto St Ives. Not really fussed about Lands End as have heard its very commercialised. Would love to hear of any little places around there that I should visit. Not sure where to spend this night.

Day 3 - Tour St Michael's Mount then head to Corfe Castle. Spend the night in around Corfe Castle. ( I know this is a long drive but I am a huge Famous Five fan and need to see this castle)

Day 4 - Tour Corfe Castle and steam train then head to Bath for the last night.

Day 5 - Tour Bath then back to London

I know I am not doing this beautiful part of England justice, however I need to at least see the spots I have been dreaming about before heading home. As you can see I'm would rather coastal then inland large cities. I guess Im just worried that I am hugely underestimating how busy your roads get and if it says 3.5 hrs from point A to B then it might actually be more like 5 hrs

Because trains are so much faster- on Day one you might want to go from Paddington to, say, Taunton or, probably, Exeter to start the rental? Even go as far as Bodmin, but there is less rental choice and the station (‘Bodmin Parkway’) is out of town .

Gets you much closer to your “targets” for the day.

I would get off the train at Taunton rather than Bristol where you would have to navigate your way out of a large and busy city centre.

In Taunton there are a number of car hire options most of which are right by the A38 which will take you out to the motorway which you would be on for short while before taking the A361 towards Clovelly.

Thanks so much for that advice, looks like hiring a car in Taunton might be the best option.

<<I guess Im just worried that I am hugely underestimating how busy your roads get>> it depends how you are getting those estimates.

If via Googlemaps, and as you are based in Aus, if you simply get a timing estimate it uses "Leave Now" and that might be in the middle of our UK night (hence fast travel). It's best to insert a specific date and departure time; which gives a more realistic range of driving times.

You then need to add time for any restbreaks (you will need them driving on our type of roads) etc and then add on time for finding suitable/available parking locations and getting from there to where you actually wish to be.

i think it's too much for five days, but it's your call. You will need to be aware that the five days will consist of little more than driving.

I'd certainly be going further than Bristol on the train - Exeter St David's would be much better and not much longer on the train. Or if you travel to Taunton, you could drive up to Williton and take the A39 through Somerset and North Devon - the drive across Exmoor in particular is spectacular (In fact with only five days I'd recommend you tour Devon rather than Cornwall).

I find that journey planners like Google Maps are very optimistic when it comes to travel times, but that may be more to do with my own driving style. I like to take things slow and steady and make regular stops for refreshements and other physical needs.

I agree with taking the train at least as far as Taunton.
