Winter Weekend - MV or Nantucket for the day?

Hi -

I have researched the forum quite a bit but can't seem to decide between going to MV or Nantucket for the day.

We'll be staying in Falmouth this weekend but want to venture out to one of the islands on Saturday for lunch. Which would be the best choice? We'd want to take the car with us on the ferry so I know both have that option. Just what's the best one for the views and a nice relaxing lunch?

Thanks.

If you are in Falmouth, your only option for the ferry is Martha's Vineyard, otherwise you will have to drive to Hyannis to get the ferry to Nantucket. I would choose the Vineyard regardless as it is bigger & there is more to see & do. Check out The Atlantic in Edgartown for lunch as it is right on the harbor.

Taking your car to either island for a day trip is a pretty expensive indulgence. Have you checked the ferry rates?

If you're really intent on taking your car, I'd go with MV, because the fare to Nantucket would be very high. I'd probably opt for MV in any case, simply because it's a much quicker trip.

Lots of lovely views and places for lunch on the Cape. If this is your first time on the Cape I, personally, would not bother going to either island. It's going to be a very expensive lunch if you take the car. Wrong time of year.

Thank you all!

We have been to the Cape before but wanted to venture off to the Vineyard since there isn't much to do this time of year. We want a relaxing weekend though so we don't mind it.

I checked the ferry sites and didn't see prices out of the ordinary but maybe I'm missing the car fee.

We're arriving Friday night until Sunday morning and again, just looking for nice relaxing views and of course good food. Staying in North Falmouth. Any other tips to pass the time?

Thanks!

IMHO it would be more relaxing to go to MV. You can see it in front of you in Falmouth and so there is less of a time committment to get there. During a visit to Falmouth last summer we almost hopped the Island Queen just to go over and have lunch in Oak Bluffs. If would be very easily done but we weren't taking a car.

I guess Casino Wharf will be open. If so the view is wonderful so you could stop there for a drink if you can fit it in. Enjoy

Cost of car round trip could be as much as $320 or as low as $87 depending on size and whether you go high speed.

There is no high-speed car ferry from Falmouth to the Vineyard. A small sedan & two passengers is $119.00 r/t for this weekend. Passengers alone is $32.00 r/t. You do not need a car to enjoy the Vineyard for a day trip, there is good public transportation on the island:

Other things to do can be found in the Cape Cod Times entertainment listings:

Go to MV since you will be in Falmouth. If you must have a car, rent one there for the day. It will be less expensive than taking your own car on the ferry.
