Sunchaser Vacation Villas @ Riverview

Hi, three adults are traveling to Sunchaser Vacation Villas @ Riverview in mid-October. We're looking for interesting things to do in the area...cooking classes, horseback riding, hiking, etc. Any suggestions?

We stayed one week at Riverview in early September. Weather was ideal, and much warmer than we expected; definitely warmer than it will be in October. Even at that time, when summer activities were just winding down, we found very little to do except for hiking. If you play golf and it's not too cold, you will be happy. We pretty much depended on the hikes organized by the timeshare. On the positive side, this timeshare offers more activities than most of the ones we've stayed at. They offered painting classes, photography classes, archery and jewelry making. However, the recreational staff, except for the director are usually short term and keep changing along with the season, so activities might be different. The leader who ran the archery, jewelry making and glass etching classes left at the end of September. The entire staff however, was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable so I'm sure that whoever they get to replace staff that have left will be as high quality.

We had planned to visit several towns while we were there, but after being disappointed with the more significant towns such as Radium Hot Springs, we kept more local. We enjoyed Invermere for shopping and eating and Panorama for the scenery. Before arriving at Fairmont Hot Springs, we had toured the Canadian Rockies in Alberta so we had already been to Banff. Otherwise, Banff would be a nice place for you to visit but it's about 2 hours away.

There is horseback riding near the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort but it never seemed to be in operation while we were there. There are definitely enough hikes in the area and we were happy that we were able to go in groups because we felt safer because of the presence of bears. A black bear was spotted on one of our hikes. A must-do hike is the HooDoo Trail. There are good trails near Radium Hot Springs, but for us, doing one or two hikes a day with the timeshare did not allow us time to do more extensive ones.

We managed to find enough to do for the week, but my husband had to resort to shopping which he hates, just to keep occupied. We were not thrilled with the actual Riverview building as it's in the middle of nowhere, and you must drive just to get to the recreation center. If you're lucky, you'll get a room that has a private balcony rather than one that other people pass through to get to their rooms. . The room was quiet, but poorly laid out.

Don't mean to be negative, but just bring good hiking shoes and reading material.

Most tourist things will be closed right after Thanksgiving Oct 14/13 so you will have few choices. The hot pools at Fairmont are open daily for soaking or the pool for swimming.

Hiking is free and easy to get to, also you can rent Mountain bikes in Invermere if that is something you want to try. Many trails with all levels of scariness around.

Fairmont has a good trail system in place and they have great maps so easy to follow.

Stop on the way to Invermere at Bavins Glass Blowing to see if they are doing any classes or demos very interesting.

College of the Rockies, Invermere Campus had cooking classes some evenings maybe worth a look at their schedule of upcoming classes, Sushi, Appies and Soup Making were some last year.
