After partying don't drive, call Opération Nez Rouge!

Yup this is the time of the year for my usual tip about Opération Nez Rouge (Operation Red Nose)

This QuébecCity original has spread in the rest of Canada and many other places around the world. If you drank a wee bit too much ask your host or barman to call Operation Nez Rouge and volunteers will show up at your doorsteps. One will drive you safely to your home or hotel and the second will drive in another car behind to pick up the first driver when the trip back is finished. This is a free service but donations are accepted and distributed to local charities.

Don't play with your life and the ones of others, better to wait some time as there might be delays, particularly this week-end with the Tremblant 24 hours and many office parties. Call 1-888-639-4011, the service is on Facebook and Twitter for up to date news and waiting time but it might be in French only. Also you can dial *08 on Rodgers cell phones.

And if you have some free time at night this week-end you can call 819- 717-1411, your help will be gladly accepted as some more drivers are sorely missed this year due to the very large territory covered.

So if you want to use the service or want to call for somebody else it is better to call 1 to 2 hours prior to departure instead of waiting to the last moment.

Great post, Rick. It pays to remind people, especially at this time of year. Nez Rouge is a great service and I am positive that it not only has saved lives and property but also has prevented a number of drunk drivers from suffering fairly severe penalties meted out to those who are caught driving under the influence.

"Penalties and Measures provided under the Highway Safety Code

1.Immediate suspension of the driving privilege: 90 days

If you are pulled over for impaired driving, or if you refuse to provide a breath or blood sample or to submit to physical coordination tests, whether you are subject to the zero alcohol rule or your blood-alcohol level is above 80 mg/100 ml of blood.

2.Immediate seizure and impoundment of the vehicle if your blood-alcohol level is above 160 mg/100 ml, or for a refusal to provide a breath or blood sample, a refusal to submit to physical coordination tests, or any other repeat offence.

3.For a 1st impaired driving conviction, your driver's licence is revoked for 1 year* (3 years* if your blood-alcohol level was above 160 mg/100 ml, or for a refusal to provide a breath or blood sample or a refusal to submit to physical coordination tests), and you are liable to a minimum fine of $1,000 under the Criminal Code.

4.Upon a 1st impaired driving conviction, a mandatory summary assessment of the driver's behaviour conducted through the Programme d'évaluation des conducteurs automobile (PECA), administered by the Association des centres de réadaptation en dépendance du Québec, to determine if the offender's behaviour with respect to alcohol or drugs is compatible with the safe operation of a vehicle. If the assessment is unfavourable, the individual will be required to undergo a comprehensive assessment."

Thanks Rick, great reminder. When you live as remotely as I do you work out the designated driver thing pretty early and stick to it. BUt I know the whole resort area benefits greatly from Nez Rouge, it is a fabulous service.

They gladly accept donations of money, as well as time.
