Hi Poupoun,

Welcome to the GATINEAU TRAVEL FORUM

<< Not too expensive but nice enough >>

Truly is a "subjective" statement... so knowing a Dollar Amount per person (ie Mains $ 10 to $ 15 -OR- $ 15 to $ 20 -OR- $ 20 to $ 25 etc) might be more helpful...

Also how many of you will be in your party?

Are you looking for "seperate" seating... or is being in the main room of a restaurant ok ?

Preferences for types of food ? (Or alternatively types of foods you wouldn't want)

Are you open to chain restaurants (ie St Hubert BBQ) etc.

The more info you give us in regards to your needs... then the easier it is for us to make suggestions customized for you.

Hope this is helpful,

Cheers!

Hi Poupoun,

Sadly none of our National Museums (National Gallery – Museum of Civilization – War Museum) have much in the way of on-site Restaurants… just a few cafes and cafeterias…

:-( *frown*

Technically, there is a Bistro in the Museum of Civilization called Bistro Boreal, but it is cold (mostly empty) and well disappointing in my opinion = civilization.ca/plan-your-visit/amenities/re…

As for your other choices…

Seafood isn’t a strong point for Ottawa (too far from the ocean IMO) … The exception would be the local fishmongers which have very casual cafes and bistros (Lapointes – Byward Market, Whalesbone – Bank Street, and Pelican Grill – South Bank)… except for Lapointes, none are particularly close to your Hotel… and Lapointe’s is probably far too casual (although the fish and seafood is excellent and really fresh = http://www.lapointefish.ca/locations/en/all ). Infact I just ate at a Lapointe’s Seafood Grill this past weekend (another location) and am happy to report it is as great as always.

NOTE – Do not fall for the “touristy” seafood restaurants that you’ll see in the Byward Market area… they just don’t deliver the quality

As for Italian…

Not familiar with the Restaurant that you have mentioned in Gatineau, but can tell you that over in the Byward Market area (25 George Street) that Mamma Grazzi’s Kitchen = http://www.mammagrazzis.com/ consistently wins awards for having the best Pasta in town !!

Also in the Byward Market Area (35 William Street) Vittoria Trattoria = http://www.vittoriatrattoria.com/ which is more upscale, but still good (they have one of the best wine lists in the city, if that matters to you)

If Pizza is your thing… then also in the Byward Market (74 George Street) there is also The Grand = http://www.thegrandpizzeria.com/ … which has a good following for their authentic Napoletana pizza.

Beyond that, and well quite frankly some to the better Italian places are to be found in Ottawa’s Little Italy (Preston Street) or out in the western suburbs (Barrhaven, Nepean, etc)

Personally, if I was in search of a special meal in the Gatineau-Hull Area of the city, I’d be looking at French or French-Canadian Restaurants… there are certainly many excellent ones on that side of the Ottawa River… some of the best rated with moderate pricing… (high end would be Le Baccara at the Casino Lac-Leamy… one of the few CAA / AAA 5-Diamond Winning Restaurants in Canada)

Les Fougeres (Chelsea) = http://fougeres.ca/

L’Oree du Bois (Chelsea) = http://www.oreeduboisrestaurant.com/en (listed here on TA as L’Oree des Bois)

Le Pied De Cochon (248 Rue Montcalm) = http://www.lepieddecochon.ca/

All of the restaurants I've mentioned have listings here on TripAdvisor.

BUT for more specific info on eats in Ottawa, you should check out one of the Nationla / Regional / Local Websites that is dedicated to Restaurant Reviews (you can GOOGLE to find them)... Such websites are dedicated to this feature... (vs Travel which is TA's primary focus)... so they often have more up-to-date info etc… UrbanSpoon, Chowhound, Restaurantica, Yelp, Ottawa Foodies, to name but a few...

Hope this is helpful,

Cheers!

Hi Poupoun,

You are very welcome... glad to help.

Vittoria Trattoria indeed does have a second location on Riverside, south of the city out by the Airport... lol, but if I am going to be that far south... then you'll find me at La Porto A Casa in Barrhaven (when I can snag a reservation... you need to call 10 to 14 Days in advance). This is where they serve Italian food in a "family style" restaurant... not a chain, and not cheap... but very very good !!

La Porto a Casa (Anne DesBrisay's Capital Dining Review) = capitaldining.ca/restaurant-review/…

Cheers!

Hi Poupoun,

Lol, a subject close to my heart (hence my User Name)… so happy to comment on this one.

The BYOWine movement (and legislation began in Quebec back in the 1980s)… it has been slow to catch on here in Ontario (IMO too many greedy Restauranteurs).

That said there are “some” establishments in Ontario, but the majority of them charge not only Corkage Fees… but HIGH Corkage Fees ($ 25 is not uncommon… $ 10 and up seems to be the norm).

For more info check out this website = http://www.bringmywine.ca/ottawa.html

As well there is much confusion about Ontario’s legislation in regards to allowing Customers to THTR (take home the rest) so that they promote responsible drinking (most places don’t know the law, so they “claim” it isn’t allowed)

Thank goodness, in the midst of all this bureaucratic confusion, that conservative thinking Ottawa sits so close to the Quebec Border, and more civilized Gatineau-Hull where the BYOWine (and BYOBeer) establishments can be found…

Unfortunately, I can't find a website on-line dedicated to listing such locations in the Gatineau area, but you can just do what we do whenever we are planning to eat out on that side of the River… we call ahead and ask their policy… and like Montreal, most Restaurants do not charge a Corkage Fee.

Hope this is helpful,

Cheers!
