Where to take Ferry from Mainland, BC to get to Parksville?

We'll be travelling by RV from Manitoba to Vancouver Island this summer. We'll be staying with family in Parksville, Qualicum beach. We want to avoid taking our RV through the city of Vancouver and were hoping to take a ferry to the Island (that will bring us closest to Parksville) from another place on the Mainland besides the city of Vancouver. Thanks

@ Sarah :

And how would poster get there ?

@Bob:

One way or the other (so coming from the east towards Vancouver or coming from Whistler): I would suggest taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nainamo.

As explained in other postings coming form the east along highway 1, you just stay on highway 1 till you reach the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay, very straightforward. Coming from Whistler you will be driving south on highway 99 and pass the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, so why would you want to drive any further?

When you are the Trans Canada Highway, (#1), you will see directional signs for the ferry. If you choose Duke Point (just south of Nanaimo), follow the ferry signs for Victoria. BUT DON"T GET A FERRY TO VICTORIA!!!! If you choose to leave from Horseshoe Bay, just stay on the freeway all the way to Horseshoe Bay. Once on the other side of the Fraser River (Port Mann Bridge), there will be an HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle, two or more passengers) lane for you to use, and might make the driving easier for you too. DO NOT use a gps for this stretch of the highway as it is a mess with all the construction.

At this time, the Duke Point terminal is temporarily closed for repairs; I don't know how long this is expected to take.

The "mid island" route is still operating out of Tsawassen, however the terminus is Departure Bay (the same as the route that originates from Horseshoe Bay). I would advise patience as you drive up the hill to connect to the Island Highway - it gets very congested even during off-season times; I don't even want to imagine what it will be like if Departure Bay is handling all the traffic from the Mainland. I would advise a reservation during summer at the best of times, but doubly so if Duke Point is still closed. There's an additional cost, but it beats spending hours waiting in line.

I think kg57 makes a very good point about congestion at Departure Bay. The Gulf Island ferry, the mainland ferry and now the mid-Island ferry are all descending on that terminal. Thankfully at slightly different arrival and departure times. Duke Point, the regular mid-Island terminus from Tsawwassen will be closed for about ±3 more months, according to media news. Once those repairs of the dock are completed, all will be back to normal.
