Drive through Norfolk County

We will be visiting family in the Niagara area next month. We have been to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake a number of times and would like to take a day or two to see something different.

We have been looking at doing a day's drive down to Point Dover, Turkey Point Provincial Park, Long Point and perhaps as far as Port Stanley. We like to point the car in a general direction and see what is around the next curve. Does anyone have any favorite sights, or sites, that we should stop in at? Any recommendations for lunch and/or dinner?

Thanks so much.

Hi itchyfeet~

There are lots of opportunities for seeing sights/sites through that area.

PORT Dover is a lovely little lakeside town with interesting shops, a few good restaurants and lots of picturesque views.

David's is a fine dining restaurant that comes highly recommended:

And as well the Erie Beach Hotel is a well known spot for excellent fish....plus all the trimmings. It has a bar/pub and a fine dining section with salad carts brought to your table.

The drive from Port Dover to Long Point to explore a gorgeous part of Ontario is very pleasant along Highway 24.

<<The Long Point area, comprising 26,250 hectares, was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in April, 1986, the third to be named in Canada and one of 15 biosphere reserves found in this country today. It provides an example of the Great Lakes coastal ecosystem and a unique blend of habitats – long uninterrupted beaches, undisturbed sand dunes, grassy ridges, wet meadows, woodlands, marshes and ponds, coldwater streams, and the shallow Inner Bay. Its delicate dunes and marshes teem with songbirds, spawning fish, turtles and frogs.>>>

I actually wouldn't take the time to stop in Turkey Point unless you plan to use the beach. It has far less to offer.

If you're interested in Ontario history, about 45 minutes north west you can find an impressive National Heritage Site in Tillsonburg. The Annandale House and Museum has been lovingly restored to its grandeur and well worth seeing......

Depending on if you've had lunch or not, Niko's in downtown Tillsonburg is a nice change from a chain restaurant with very good light fare or full meals, and a decent wine list.

From Tillsonburg to Port Stanley is less than an hour, but if you had time I would stop in Sparta for a little look around at the shops and Peter Robson's art gallery.

Slightly outside Sparta is wonderful little garden, art and gift shop called Winter Wheat. I even prefer spending time there more than in Sparta sometimes......

From Sparta to Port Stanley is a short drive and you can stay at either Kettle Creek Inn or Inn on the Harbour.M.E & Suzie's comes highly recommended for dining.

Explore Port Stanley the next day and then either return to the Falls via Highway 401/403 or backtrack to visit anything you missed the first day, or want to see again.

Hope that gives you some ideas for a little tour. :)

Erie Beach Hotel in Port Dover has the sweetest Perch lunches and dinners.

BTW Port Dover has huge motorcyle gatherings every Friday the 13th.

Hi Tobie and gyx

I thought I would let you know that we did take our day's drive through Norfolk County, following some of your recommendations, and quite enjoyed it. I always like driving through "small town" and rural southern Ontario. It has such a "settled" feel about it, with the red brick buildings, gardens and "well-mannered" fields.

As it happened, the County seemed to be having a pickup day for "stuff" being purged in spring cleaning and there piles of "stuff" at the bottom of many driveways, with a certain number of people stopping at piles to troll for treasures. (From our observation during the course of the day, an enterprising student could have furnished his or her digs completely several times over with what we saw.) It was quite interesting.

I was disappointed that we did not get quite as far as Sparta and Port Stanley. It was just a bit too far (at least for us) starting out after breakfast in Niagara Falls. We will have to leave that to another time when can stay overnight in Port Stanley.

We drove directly to Tilsonburg on our way out and had lunch at Nikos, as you suggested. Because it was Sunday, Nikos had a Sunday brunch rather than their regular menu. It was a good value at $11.95 - well cooked and lots of selection.

We then went down to Long Point. What a nice park, and that little beach community just before the park gates was quite attractive. The beach itself reminded me of the beach at Sandbanks in Prince Edward County, which we visited in 2007. It seemed to be a good beach for families, being shallow, as far as we could tell from the people in the water, for a long way out. We had a lovely walk along it. (We were not quite prepared for the number of mosquitoes, which coated the car, the door to the facilities, and anything else warm and stationary. Thankfully, they did not extend as far as the beach.)

Our final stop was Port Dover for an ice cream along the pier. Right at the water's edge, it reminded me of beach resorts, I had gone to as a child. I did see the Erie Beach Hotel, which must be an institution in Port Dover, having been in business since 1946, but it was a bit too early to stop for dinner, so missed the perch.

This may not sound very exciting, but we did have a very pleasant day. So, thank you again for your recommendations.

(PS gyx, thank you for your recommendation regarding the lemon meringue pie at Betty's in Niagara Falls. It was really good.)

Sorry I missed your trip report on your day out in June until now.

Glad to hear you were able to stop at a fair number of places though Port Stanley is quit a bit farther than one might think coming from Niagara Falls. You really do have to spend an overnight. Thanks too for recommending this thread to another traveller. :)

It was a good day, Tobie. As I said, I like driving in rural/small town Ontario. It is so different from Lower Mainland (i.e., Metro Vancouver) BC.
