Camper van rental

Does anyone know of an inexpensive company to rent camper vans from in the Auckland area? My boyfriend priced one company yesterday at nearly $290(USD) per day. Seems steep.

Welcome to the forum :)

well here's the bad news-

Campervans are not a budget item. If looking for a fully equipped camper with shower, loo and toilet it will, in the summer months, cost more than a rental car and hotel/motel accommodation. On top of that you will have increased fuel and insurance costs, plus the nightly campground fees of up to $45 per night if wanting power and water hook-ups. The one company I recommend is Maui and no, they are not inexpensive.

There is also the budget sleepervan ( a van with a mattress in the back) and possibly a gas ring to cook on which is much more affordable - however do beware as some firms are better than others. Read the many campervan threads on the forum to see who to avoid. Don't be tempted to pull off the road and stay the night in picnic spots etc to avoid camp fees. There is a $200 fine for illegal camping.

the good news -

If looking for ease of travel on a budget then consider renting a car and staying in backpacker hostels or campground cabins. Consider Apex, a well regarded, affordable rental company now owned by Avis.

Best of luck :)
