1 night in Auckland

Hi. 2 couples landing at 3pm Jan 4th in Auckland & collecting rental car at the airport. We are travelling next day to Paihia for 2 night stay.

Any suggestions please on what area to stay for the 1 night & taking in to account we need to park the car?

Prices seem very high for city centre so If we stay outside this area is it easy by public transport or taxi to get to?

Thanks in advance

1. Don't get rental car as soon as you arrive. Catch a taxi into a central downtown hotel. Pick up rental car early next morning from a central depot.

Then you've saved yourself 1 days rental cost, and overnight parking.

Or 2. Head straight north to Orewa, nice beachside suburb, with more relaxed dining and local atmosphere. Motels have free parking. This also means that you're already out of the city and can hit the road further north first thing in the morning before traffic increases.

The Quest have apartment-hotels on upper Queen Street and lower Queen Street. Both are handy to rental depots around the Hobson St ridge, and also to those along Beach Road.

The Skybus is $19.00 per adult one way into the city, and buses stop outside both Quest properties. I mention this accommodation option due to it having 2 br apartments at affordable (for Auckland city) prices. Probably need to take a taxi to your chosen rental company the following morning.

I too would leave the rental car pickup until the following day. Another option would be to stay near the airport and then collect a car from one of the many depots in the Mangere area the following day. Gives you easy access to the tunnel - NW motorway from Massey to Albany the following day. Avoids the city centre entirely, with less traffic using the new motorway system from the airport.

Not a good idea to pick up a rental car and drive off a long haul flight in any case; not recommended at all.

Given you won't be arriving into town until the evening and will probably be tired, staying near the airport and picking up your car next day makes sense and an easy start to your drive the next morning.
