Sth Lake Tahoe one night or two

We have 2 nights between leaving Yosemite and arriving at pre booked accom in SF. We plan to drive from Foresta YNP via Tioga Pass and Lee Vining to Sth Lake Tahoe on Sat 28 Sept. Not sure whether to stay 2 nights SLT or split one night each SLT and Napa area. How is traffic likely to be if we drive from SLT to SF in one day (Mon 30th). We need to return hire car to Union Sq SF area by 3pm Mon 30th Sept. Is 2 nights SLT a better option and miss Napa altogether, we will be sight seeing, cruise the lake, take a ride on the gondola, maybe will not fit it all in a one night stay. at this time of year could we leave these 2 nights open, ie, not book accom but see how we go, or as it is the weekend are we better off to pre book and lock in. thanks

If you were to go to both So. Lake Tahoe and Napa in two nights, you would be shorting both places. Leaving from Foresta and getting to So. Lake Tahoe is going to take a while, and there are many places you may want to stop (especially up on the Tioga Road) and see the big views. So, you won't have much of a day left once you arrive in So. Lake Tahoe. You'll definitely need another day to see a few things there, and what you've listed is gonna take some time.

Coming back to SF from South Lake Tahoe on a Monday, I'd advise you to leave about 10 am, so you miss traffic jams in the morning going into Sacramento (on the way) and pm traffic jams going into San Francisco in the late afternoon.

I'd prebook my stay in Tahoe, as Saturday nights are always popular.
