Will we get stuck in the snow on the roads ?

We are thinking about coming to Lake Tahoe on the 14th Jan 2013, fly into Reno and get a suitable SUV rent a car with snow tyres. My only concern is if it's been snowing are we likely to be stuck at Reno?

We will ski for 2 days, any other must do's?

We are thinking about staying at the fireside lodge.

Thanks in advance.

Not likely. The roads close when it's dangerous to drive but you can typically drive from Reno to Truckee and then south to the lake. 80 may close between Truckee and westerly to Kingvale about if there is a big storm. The roads are plowed all during a snow storm because 80 is an important roadway for commerce. It's rare that the road closes and then for limited periods of time. Not days.

As Suzie mentioned, it would be a very rare event that you would be stuck in Reno. I drove to Lake Tahoe last week during a heavy snowstorm and made it just fine. It did take longer, but the drive was beautiful.

I believe the fireside lodge is located at South Lake Tahoe, so the advised route in the winter would be to drive 395 south to Carson City and take Hwy 50 to South Lake Tahoe. These roads are very well maintained.
