Tahoe in summer with children

We are planning 3 nights around lake tahoe next August with 3 children as part of California road trip. We have never been to US before. Where would be the best location for us, we want lakeside beach, some walking, some relaxing, Some nice restaurants. A fun activity, thinking truckee river rafting? So far I've looked at squaw valley village or Marriott south Lake Tahoe. Any other suggestions to sleep 5?

If you want to do Truckee River rafting then you probably want to be in North Lake Tahoe, not South Lake Tahoe.

The West shore of Tahoe offers beautiful scenery and is close to Emerald Bay and Tahoe City. Lots of hiking opportunities and close to river rafting. Check out Sunnyside Inn which is right on the lake or vrbo.com for home rentals in the area. This area is very charming and family friendly. South shore is nice too but is where the casinos are and tends to be geared more for adults.

In the summer we stay in north LT in Incline Village, on the NV side of the lake at the Hyatt Resort. They have a lake front property, water activities where you can rent kayaks and boats, a casino since it's in NV, a large lovely swimming pool and hot tubs, health spa, playground, kids arcade, and many restaurants in walking distance.

The Hyatt has family suites, rooms with bunk beds, fire pits to roast marshmallows, volleyball nets

We go river rafting in Tahoe City, an easy drive from IV, but not an area I'd care to stay in the busy summer. Lots of traffic. Just two miles from the Hyatt is beautiful Sand Harbor beach where the water is crystal clear.

That sounds perfect.

Although I've realised I should have said we'll be arriving from San Francisco and heading onto yosemite so would south lake be better?

I'm going to look at the west lake area too now. Thank you

The Marriott Timber Lodge in South Lake Tahoe is a nice property. We stayed there one May and really enjoyed our time there under their Timeshare Invitation.

There are some great places to dine in SLT. Evan's Gourmet Cafe and Cafe Fiore are two of our favorites. Enjoy your time at the lake! :)

It's about 2:30 minutes from Incline Village on the north shore to Lee Vining, CA, where you turn into Yosemite National Park, from Lake Tahoe.

About the same time from Emerald Bay on the west side, 2:37 min. to Lee Vining.

Not all accommodations are lake front in South LT.

I would look to North Lake Tahoe and areas like King's Beach, Incline Village and Tahoe Vista.

I would visit Squaw for sure though, the High Camp area is great.

Check out Franciscan Lakeside Lodge on the north shore. It is very relaxed, would be a great spot for children. has it's own private beach where you can rent kayaks/jet skis etc and there are many good restaurants in the area.

most units have a kitchen and gas fireplace/stove

I can't imagine taking children to Cafe Fiore or Evans so I don't get why anyone would maek that recommendation. I have never seen children in either place in alll the times I've been. Did you see any on 2007 when you went?

I love both the Marriott Grand and the Marriott Timber Lodge but in the summer there are better locations than South Lake Tahoe.

Don't know how much you want to spend or what kind of accomodations but lakeside in Kings Beach would be fun, or someplace like Brockway Springs:

Or near tahoe city in Tahoe Tavern
