Cheap Motels

It's been a number of years, but I recall back in the day just driving up and checking different motels for rates and then finding the cheapest one usually under 40 bucks. Of course this was way back in the early 2000's.

Does anyone know of any motels that are dirt cheap that can be booked for weekends during the winter? I've looked at the typical sites like Expedia, Hotels.com etc. but wondering if there are some mom and pop motels that are even cheaper that might not be listed online.

Motels in the $50 range in Lake Tahoe are Motel 6, Best Value Inn and Matterhorn Motel.

Since you have looked for places on Hotels.com and Expedia there is no point in me listing those. When I want to see all lodging available in an area I Google something I know in the area and then use the "Search Nearby" function. It shows pretty much what's in the area. So for SLT I Googled Harrah's. Then I clicked the "Search Nearby" and entered “Lodging” in the space provided. The map was then populated by dozens of places near Harrah’s. Hovering my cursor over them, many were places not listed on the 3rd party reservation sites. Places like:

Big Mountain Inn, which has a fall special 3 nights for $119. You could run into a good price in the winter depending on when you go.

Tahoe Villa which shows rooms starting at $39

Alpenrose starting at $49

etc

Ah that's a good idea. Totally forgot about the Google nearby function. I'll do that. I'll take a look at the ones you mentioned to. Thanks.

Yah we've done the 50 dollar motels off the websites but was looking for deals like the 3 night special at Big Mountain Inn that susie-travels mentioned.

Thanks for both your replies.

You may have more of a problem finding sub $50 rooms during a weekend, but there are a lot of mom and pop places around that look for drop in type traffic. There are a few places on the Pioneer trail that sure have to be cheap...I don't know how they stay in business. The only one I can think of the name is Thunderchief. The location is not bad if you are interested in the Heavenly and casino area.

There was some place along Lake Tahoe blvd. that had a sign that said rooms for $34.95/night, but this was during the week. Sorry, I did not note the name.

Also, you might check some of the places along Hwy 50 between Meyers and before you get to the "Y". I am sure they have to be cheap prices.

Good hunting !

CaSwede I think some of those cheap places along Pioneer Trail actually appeal to some of the min wage workers in town. Housing is so expensive for low earners when you need first and last & security deposit.

Suzie- That sure makes sense to me. Anyone needed a cheap place to stay while waiting for more stable housing could be attracted to some of these places. They have a short walk to the casino/gondola area. I checked the Thunderchief and they are quoting $30/night during the week. That is cheap lodging and they come in. make your bed and run the vacuum for you too.

Back to the O.P. -- I know you were asking about South Lake Tahoe, but last winter I was at Crystal Bay at the Tahoe Biltmore and they were quoting $54.95/night for the weekends. It was under $40/night week days.

Might try picking up one of those hotel/motel coupon books found in many chain restaurants and roadside stops, the ones with the green and yellow covers. Also here is a good link with more bargains, one place advertising a $25 rate.
