Hwy 395

In the beginning stages of planning a road trip for mid September. Will be going from Lassen to Tahoe then down 395 to Lee Vining. I have never been on 395 in the North. As a kid we would go on it to go to Death Valley and Mammoth. I loved it. Soooo anyone have any must stops from Tahoe to Lee Vining? My husband loves hotsprings and we are into history, geology and photography. Thanks for any hints. ideas. mile markers ect...

Gas prices must have come down a lot since your trip. Vons in Bishop has gas for $3.85 a gallon and other stations are right around that. It is true that if you are headed for Carson City, Reno, or Tahoe, it's best to wait, if you can, until Topaz Lake or the Carson Valley where gas is almost 20 cents cheaper. But, if headed for Yosemite, it's always a good idea to fill up in Bishop. The Vons price there is only 20 cents more than the price at Safeways in the Bay Area which isn't too bad considering the distance from the refineries in that remote location.

You can always find the best prices for gas on mapquest:

I'm making this same trip from Lassen (Chester/Lake Almanor) at the same time. It's only a couple of hours from Tahoe to Lee Vining. I don't see how that could be tiring. I wish they'd set some speed traps in this town. I'm tired of tourists driving like mad.

On the Owens Valley to Lake Tahoe 395 drive have found two places that have pretty consistently had the best gas prices over the years. First is the Indian casino at the north end of Bishop, the Arco in downtown Bishop will sometimes be the same. The other is the Arco AM/PM at the SW corner of Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville, excellent place to fill up going to or from SLT. Not advised is fueling up at the Lake itself, sticker shock in store if it should be required, best to avoid if possible.
