Top Ten Restaurants

Plan on vacationing a week in Lake Tahoe vicinity this summer and was wondering what would be your favorite top ten restaurants. We enjoy all types of food, and the restaurants do not have to be all 5 star. We are more interested in the quality of food than the star rating. This is our first visit and & I would appreciate your comments & suggestions. We also enjoy day trips/excursions so you do not have to limit list to just restaurants in Lake Tahoe. This approach has helped us in vacation planning in the past.

We also are big fans of "Diners, Drive-Inns & Dives", so we are going to hit a few of Guy's favorites in Reno. If you have visited any of the one's in Reno he had on his show I would love your review/comments. As you can tell we love good food so we travel to find it if it is available.

Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions.

Wow. That is a really tough question- as top 10 restaurants is dependant upon opinion of food tastes. Myself I seldom eat red meat and eat a low fat diet, so my opinions of "good food" are probably not much use to you. I have watched

Guy's show a few times, and I thought- yuck not me. I hope someone can come up with something for you.

In terms of Reno restaurants Guy recommended - Louis' Basque Corner is excellent.

It has gone through a change of ownership recently so there is some changes that will be going on, but they plan to keep the good things going. Lots of good food served basque style

For hamburgers in Reno (Travel TV did a special on these and the locals love it too) the Awful Awful is really good

If you like buffets, the El Dorado Casino has a top notch buffet

For Tahoe area, Cafe Fiore is good

and Evans

Also, if you like diner food, Katies at the Carson Valley Inn has good food at low prices (and enough food for a doggie bag)

(its about a 30 minute drive from South lake Tahoe area to Minden).

Forest Buffet at Tahoe has good views of the lake

For a picnic, the sandwiches at the cork and more are good in Tahoe

Mini, appreciate your suggestions. Great list to work with. Of all of them you mentioned is there one or two that are your personal favorites? As I mentioned earlier, we enjoy 5 star to one star. We just love good food , It adds that special something to our get away''s.

Thanks again for you input.

Lone Eagle Grille is our favorite restaurant on the lake. It's located at the Hyatt Resort in Incline Village.

In South Lake Tahoe: Cafe Fiore (make reservations) Evan's Gourmet Cafe, Harvey's 19 KItchen, the buffet at Harrah's (beautiful views) and Harvey's 19 Kitchen (also beautiful views.) For a cool litle diner experience, we love the Banana Pancakes at Red Hut Waffle Shop.

Lone Eagle Grill @ the Hyatt is also very nice. This is in a lakefront setting, very pretty! :)

It's hard to tell who has been to which restaurant since you aren't getting any details.

Evans - Been many times. It is fantastic and reviewing the menu will not give the full idea of the experience since we typically order off the daily board. Very fresh ingredients grown locally. Desserts are also incredible. The restuarant is in a former cottage right on 89 with no lake view. The room is just open with tables for 2 or 4 and then a couple of round ones that can seat 6 or 8. It is a pretty small room. You should make reservations. Dress is pretty casual since you are in the mountains. Not shorts and shirts casual more like dockers or dressy jeans and a collared shirt casual.

Cafe Fiore is a super tiny restuarant and feels romantic due to the intimate setting. The food is wonderful. In the summer they do have seating outside to expand service from the 7 tables inside.

Blue Water Bistro is on the dock behind the Best Western Timber Lodge. It's upstairs so you get a pretty good view of the lake. The food is very good. The dress is casual - prbablymore casual than Evans.

Riva Grill is located right in the marina so you would have a view of that. The food quality varies. Its sister retaurant Garwoods up in Carnelian Bay is much better and consistently wonderful. Both restaurants would be casual. Whenever we are at Garwoods people have stopped on the way from the beach or come in on their boats so capris maybe and definitely shorts.

Freshies is located on Tahoe Blvd down at theFremont Plaza between Fremont & johnson. Good food in a polynesian style decor. Casual.

If you like sushi then the Naked Fish is for you.

If you like Mexican food you definitely should go to the Cantina.

The Fresh Ketch in the Keys Marina is a great restaurant. Definitely worth a look. Constitnetly very good.

Beacon Bar and Grill at Camp Richardson is right on the lake. While it is good sometimes consistency is an issue. I've always had a good experience but I know others who have complained.

We like Driftwood for breakfast or lunch - it's right at the Marriott Grand.

We love Yellow Submarine for sandwiches. It's on Tallac. Pick up sandwiches for a picnic.

I know that's not all 10 but it's a start.

Suzie great list. Of all that you listed what are your top two favorites? Does not make any difference in regard to type restaurant, just your personal favorites. We enjoy all types of food so we tend to go after the quality verses a specific specialty of the house.

We always, always eat at Evans. Once we had reservations somewhere else and we called Evans to see if we could get in. Then we cancelled our other reservations. Just can never pass it up.

I think Cafe Fiore is really romantic but I do like Blue Water Bistro a little more because if it's a nice night you can eat on the tables right on the dock. watch the paddle wheel boat come and go and the lights on the lake. There are lots of wedding receptions at BW Timber Cove because it's right on the lake so the music from the reception carries over to the restaurant and you get that plus the view and good food so how can that get better?
