Only three daylight hours in Lake Tahoe. What to see, do?

After a long day's drive from Idaho (about 525 miles) in late June as part of our National Parks road trip, we'll be stopping for the night, probably in South Lake Tahoe area.

Where to stay?

We'll probably be arriving in the area around 8pm and desire a quick check-in to a clean, quite room with good bedding.

What should we see/do if we only have a couple of hours to explore before heading on down US Hwy 385 the next morning?

You have to see the lake. I would take the Heavenly Gondola up to the observation deck.

Well if you arrive at 8 PM you will not have three hours of daylight. It will be dark in an hour, and not much time to do any daylight things. The gondola will be closed at that hour. Perhaps after sitting in a car all day take a walk down to the lake for a short lakeside walk?

If you are heading down 395 the next morning, why not stay in Reno or Carson City instead of driving up to Lake Tahoe? You probably don't need to book a room now. You could play it by ear since late June is not yet high season. It might give you more flexibility on your long trip. Are you still staying in Lee Vining the next night?

I believe I misread your question. You have an hour when you get to Lake Tahoe and two in the morning? What time of the morning do you have 7-9 AM? Really not much time to do much of anything. Maybe someone will come up with an idea. ??

Inn by the Lake would be a nice place to stay, they have complimentary bikes there if you want to ride around the lake. Emerald Bay is not to miss, go to the lookout there for some awesome scenery. :)

So that you might see some of the lake driving over from Reno, head up the Mt. Rose Hwy over to Incline Village. There will be a lookout at the top with a great view of the lake. From Incline, head south on Hwy. 28 to the south shore. Beautiful drive, about 25 min. You'll pass Sand Harbor, one of the best beaches to view 2 mi. from IV.

The Holiday Inn Express is a good place to stay, right at Stateline. They serve free breakfast in the morning.
